How much better is the Plextor M6S 128GB comapred to a 2yr old Intel 330 120GB?
I see the sequential speeds not very big difference but the random speeds M6S wins by a lot.

Will it be a waste of money to upgrade to the M6S?

I doubt you'll notice any difference. I've used a few different brands of SSDs and I really can't feel any significant difference among them.

The only time I upgrade from one SSD to another is when I decide that I need a higher capacity.

Samsung Fixes 840 EVO SSD Performance Drop With Firmware Patch

Samsung Fixes 840 EVO SSD Performance Drop With Firmware Patch

Samsung released a patch to fix the performance your 840 EVO SSD might lose over time.

If you have a Samsung 840 EVO SSD, you may have noticed a loss in performance if you've owned it for a long while. Unfortunately, a bug in the design of the 840 EVO causes older blocks of data to deteriorate, resulting in poor read speeds when accessing older data. Fortunately, Samsung acknowledged this bug and released a fix.

The new firmware's version number is EXT0CB6Q, and it can be downloaded from Samsung immediately. What this firmware does is rewrite older data blocks, ensuring that the data remains fresh, avoiding excessive read-retry processes.

The update can be installed through Samsung's Magician software, or you can run it off of a bootable disk. Either way, be sure to back up your data in case something goes wrong.

You can download the EXT0CB6Q firmware directly from Samsung here. If you're unsure about how to install the new firmware, you can read through Samsung's installation guide here.

I bought a 840evo for my mbp from amazon and realized that it doesn't have the USB to Sata cable.

Any recommendations for a cable?

Also, will I need an adaptor/bracket to install into my 2010 15" mbp?

Since when does it come with a usb to sata cable??

U can go to cybermind and get those $30 2.5" sataIII to USB 3.0 enclosure. It will come with the adaptor and usb cable. As for the case, u can dun use it and put back into the box, just use the adaptor will do.

$30 just for one-time use? You can get the enclosure for $10 (sata --> usb2.0) from those selling accessories in lvl 5.

Thanks! I haven't kenna performance drop yet, so will hold it off until it slows down.

mine the performance actually looked much more drastic drop (like WAY over 50% drop) in benchmark tests than actual usage... actual usage cos i'm running linux mint... which is already super fast... so perhaps it didn't felt THAT much of slow down as compared to benchmark tests... but i think still noticeable slow down... but felt more like 10-20% slower...

wacky

For a 512 gb SSD usually the actual capacity is how many "GB" ?

For example a SSD 256 gb will show the capacity as 228 gb in the properties.
