How do you improve swimming times? Practice and more Practice?

I swim 1km(20laps, 1lap = 50m) thrice a week. Mon,Wed,Fri.

Mon - Freestyle only
Wed - Free+Breast
Fri - Breast only

I swim < 25 mins for each of them. But i wanna lower it to around 20.
Any tips?

Hi, good to hear that you love swimming. Very often than not, when we do our own swim, we will have no one to tell us what and where went wrong In such situation, best to do drills and focus on fine tuning. For example for the free style (Front crawl), you can do a single arm drill to train your arm to ensure both hand pull the right way. We often have 1 hand better than the other when come to such arm stroke. Either the left hand is better than the right or vice versa. Trained to breathe on both side does help improve your both arm in your stroke. Survey found that usually the arm on the breathing side can stroke better than the other. Remember, only perfect practise make perfect. So when you doing drills, best to have your buddy to watch your stroke in case you make mistake. Because when we make mistake, we are wasting our time to recorrect and old habit die hard. :) Good luck in your training.

Consider that you already know how to prone glide, next is to combine your prone glide with flutter kicking. Sequence goes like this:
1) Prone glide
2) Flutter kick 10 times while blowing out bubbles slowly
3) Stand up and inhale fully
4) Repeat step 1.

That was the previously posted sequence. I shall now add on a new sequence to this. We are going to do prone glide with flutter kicking and blowing bubble WITHOUT Landing.
In a 25 meter pool, stretch your kicking distance this far without landing and focus on your leg kicking and breathing coordination. The step is the same... the only different is point number 3. Instead of stand up and inhale fully, you lift up your head to breathe will leg still kicking,

Have fun and enjoy this workout. :)

Ah, get a partner? The thing is i usually swim alone.

So i should be breathing on 2 sides? Cause my breaststroke timing is faster then me doing front crawl (Freestyle)

For those who wish to see swim video can easily find them at the youtube.com. Search for swimming or front crawl swimming.

DOL-wm, probably you are a born breaststroke. Yes.... breathing on both side help you to attain balancing and generate greater awareness on your alien side. :)

Nowadays the weather also not that good..always rain and rain....cannot start the swim physically but can coach you mentally. All you have to do is to read and understand the concept before you go for your practical ma. Just like you understand the theory... then when you go for your practical, will be easier to apply. :)

Technique of breathing is about inhaling fast and blow slowly in water. This kind of breathing coordination will enable you to submerge your head in the water longer so that you get a chance to completely feel your body in the water. :)

I wanna perfect my FS too.
Problem is my legs.

I cant seem to synchronize with my strokes. Can swim, but very tiring
Its always in a mess :s13:

Any advice ??
Best is to get Coach :)

2nd best is to get somebody else spot your mistake.

3rd best is to videotape your stroke and view it later and correct it.

4th best is to view somebody else stroke that is correct.

I will help with number 4th: will post few youtube's video that I think is very good and elegant way of doing FS :)

Practising on leg kicking holding a kick board. Proper kicking will enable you to float your lower part of your body and enhance movement.

1) Alternating kicking up down action using only the thigh extensor muscle
2) Knee relax and not stiff
3) Toe downward (planta flex) all the time
4) Toe in if possible for more contact surface area

Hope this help and have fun.

I like the 9 Stroke Freestyle the best :)

9 Stroke Freestyle: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4InLAsnmKhY
Freestyle Flip Technique: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fmxmKaYpAYc
Breathing Technique: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X4APU3XMip8

This 9 stroke freestyle is a FQ (Front Quadrant) Swimmer. Yes... one arm after another. This can be achieve well if you do the touch and go method. Meaning to say.. one hand extend to the front and keep still while the other hand move a turn until it touch the still hand before it can take off. So touch.. and go.... repeat. :) Yes.... early 2 kick stablise hand movement and exchange. Good video for sharing. Thanks.

In front crawl, there are few variation of the number of kick per complete arm cycle. Namely
1) 6 kick per complete arm cycle
2) 4 kick per complete arm cycle
3) 2 kick per complete arm cycle. (Long distance swimmer)

Secret to swimming easily and able to float better in water base on few things below:
1) Stream line of body posture as much as possible in water (Lock your back, shoulder relax and bring to back, leg straighten as much as possible)
2) Understand your own floatation point (pivot point) Each ppl has their own balancing point.
3) Ease of inhaling and exhaling coordination during the stroking.

Have fun swimming. :)
