Not a watch but a pacer attached to the goggle.

http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/21/finis-aquapulse-monitors-communicates-heart-rate-to-swimmers/

There is a similar one without the HRM and function just like a pacer. U can adjuct the pacer to teh stroke rate.

http://www.swimsmooth.com/wetronome.html

THanks for the link! Something new to me! :)
Anyway , i am looking for a stroke rate counter than can count your strokes instead of setting a pace .

Imagine a watch or device that can count your stroke and time for every 25m in your whole training set automatically and plot it into your computer.
It will be a very good feedback /analysis tool to see how you fare .

eg : After doing a 10 X 100m freestyle set , the gadget can tell you :

1st 100m strokes: 68 time :1:25 heartbeat 140 bpm
2nd 100m strokes: 69 time :1:24 heartbeat 150 bpm
3rd 100m strokes: 70 time :1:23 heartbeat 160 bpm
4th 100m strokes: 70 time :1:22 heartbeat 170 bpm
5th 100m strokes: 70 time :1:21 heartbeat 180 bpm

6th 100m strokes: 68 time :1:23 heartbeat 150 bpm
7th 100m strokes: 70 time :1:22 heartbeat 170 bpm
8th 100m strokes: 70 time :1:21 heartbeat 170 bpm
9th 100m strokes: 71 time :1:19 heartbeat 180 bpm
10th 100m strokes: 73 time :1:17 heartbeat 190 bpm

That will be so cool eh!

50m pool (Olympic size ) or 25m pool?

1 lap = go and come back OR 1 length ? :)

if assuming 40 laps = 1 km , then it is a bit to the slow side ..
if assuming 40 laps = 2 km , then it is considered slightly below average

I think for 100m average is about 2 minutes for the general population.

I think average speed of 1 min per 50 meter is consider quite ok for a distance of 1.5Km which take about 30 mins to complete. What you think? :)

You are looking at the underwater butterfly video of one of the greastest swimmer of all time and current 100m ,200m butterfly world record holder- Michael Phelps.

you are welcome, before you do the full strokes, you may want to break down the whole strokes into parts, it works better .

eg: just do the dolphin kick with your arms strecthed in front.

then advance to one arm fly with dolphin kick ( left and then right )
first 20 secs of the video

then the full stroke. 50m current world record holder, Rafael Munoz

Like to ask, for those demo / instructional videos, is there anything that's not relevant if our goal is just for fitness instead of competition?

like for e.g. breast stroke requires shoulder to be out of water for competition, but not required if we just train for fitness.

Anything else?

The 1st video, i can train my core strength via this dolphin kick

The 2nd video, i will use this method to train my arm & shoulder as well. I intend to left fly 3 times, right fly 3 times, then full stroke 3 times. I want to see how strong my arm/shoulder can withstand

Indeed a good training

Just came back from swimming

Siong man, tried left front crawl with dolphin kick x 1 swing, follow by right front crawl with dolphin kick x 1 swing, then follow by a full stroke butterfly...able to swim full length. In the end very "chuan", have to rest quite some time. Repeat this stroke for another full length, then swim other stroke

Too tedious already but it's a nice try though

hmmm , i see your point but hard to answer this one leh.

in my opinion , if you do the competitive stuff, naturally you will gain fitness, i think for fitness wise, it is more like the sets/program you are doing than the technique involved , but on the other hand, with proper technique,, you will have less injury and it might work the correct muscles.

although the breast stroke is a pretty good example of a normal vs competition mode. I cant think of any other example rite now.

actually the diff is to arch your back for breast stroke for the competition mode . lots of pple think it is using the arm to come out, I use my back :)

http://swimtwitter.blogspot.com/2010/04/i-went-to-swim-meet-in-okotoks-few-days.html

I think if you want fitness, join a master swim team , i think they should have some in SG .

In my team , they are pple from 40-60 years old who join just for fitness, and it works, an example of a training day,

warm up 600m ( misc strokes , drills )

4 X 100m free
2 X 200m free
1 X 400m free
2 X 200m free
4 X 100m free

rest time varies from fast group to slower group. I think everyone who can decently swim 200m non-stop can join :)

Yes! Finally I am starting to grasp the knack of butterfly, starting to fly instead of flailing about like a drowning butterfly :) :) :)

So far I can butterfly swim 30m in 26s. Is this fast or slow? The NIE pool is only 30m(I think) long, not standard length anyway.
