So far I can butterfly swim 30m in 26s. Is this fast or slow? The NIE pool is only 30m(I think) long, not standard length anyway.

Considered fast already, even though it's 30metres. Keep up the good work

I can't even fly the full 50metres length

Just tried butterfly on a 50m pool. Results quite disappointing, so I think the NIE pool is probably actually only 25m instead of 30m. Ok lah, so I was training legs in the gym just before the swim, but I still only managed 1min for 50m butterfly.....crap...I can breaststroke faster than this :(

26s for 30m pool is quite impressive !

Do more underwater fly kick before coming out, save you a lot of energy. If you can, do 10 underwater fly kicks before you do your first fly pull :)

try and see whether your time is faster doing more underwater kicks? :)

Threadstarter,

I did not do any dolphin kick before doing full stroke butterfly. What i do is, i push hard against the wall to push myself forward, then start full stroke butterfly.

Very dissappointing, only manage to fly the most 14 strokes, till 3/5 length (talking about 50m metres length) completed

I think i have trained too much as well, because felt that my body is way too tired already. Almost everyday after lunch will feel tired easily

Thanks for the encouragements! :) I will try harder. The feeling of the dolphin wriggle is getting stronger and stronger. Hope my butterfly will eventually beat my breaststroke, otherwise very malu... :D :D :D

@foosoomin, switch to wt-lifting for few weeks lah, I think its less taxing on the heart at least. Then afterwards start swimming again and see your timings plunge to new lows!

i will encourage you to swim butterfly more often, as it build up your shoulder, tricep & core strength. Don't worry on how other swimmer look at you

I don't want to go weight lifting liao, no longer interested. I want to train my shoulder, tricep & core strength via swimming more butterfly stroke. Because now i'm able to swim 20 laps of 50metres breastroke already, at least have made some improvement

on Monday (28/6/10) evening i went to Bishan swimming pool to swim....Quite a lot of people there swimming @ the competition pool

So, i swam at the medium pool instead, the pool height is just 1 metre, but i don't care, just swim continuously for many many laps, till i cannot even remember how many laps i swam

My purpose of swimming at the medium pool is to train my arm muscle, as well as improving my stamina.

Can anyone teach how to do the dolphin kick so nice? Mine is like there is a impact on water? The video movement especially legs so nice. When I tried doing butterfly I come out once, I will sink down after doing a dolphin kick It will remain below water and moving slower. Anyone can recommend me a drill or guide for dolphin kick?

Doing a beautiful dolphine kick involve pulling (sucking) in your stomach when you doing butterfly stroke. When you pull in your stomach, your lower back strength will push it to your legs, which will do a dolphine kick. Of course you will sink in water by a bit though, but not too much or else you will need to use more arm strength to push your upper body above the water

No drill of guide, have to fly more often, like that then can improve. Practice makes a perfect butterfly, I learnt butterfly stroke by looking inside water, at how swimmers do it. That's why i said no need drill or guide

Me too, practice and practice and watch the underwater videos until I grasped the knack. But its hard to make your strokes smoother and more efficient, really needs skill.

One more thing i forgotten to highlight, our core strength needs to be strong too, so that when we're tucking in our stomach to enable dolphin kick, our body can move forward slightly more.

This way, less strokes to reach the end of the other side of the pool

Or i should say swing back your buttock to enable your legs to swing back automatically, like that you will perform dolphin kick.

When you swing back your buttock, your lower body will make a "wave" to your legs, enabling dolphin kick....

This should be the way to explain

Threadstarter,

I noticed when you swim butterfly stroke, your leg will kick...Not very right ley. Must tuck in your stomach, so that your lower body will create a "wave" that will make your leg swing....This tucking in needs good core strength

Threadstarter,

Where are you ? Have you read my post above ?

Hi Foosoomin,
Sorry...was busy recently so hardly got time to post. Anyway... the swim video is not post by me. :)
Yes... the dolphin kick requires hip moment and lean shoulder downward when executing the flip kick. Well, the video shown was not exactly right as you can see he is using too much of the leg movement rather than the whole body.

Have a nice wonderful day.
