Be very aware of your breathing. Swimming uses alot of coordination of arm, leg, breathing movements. So chances u will forget to blow out when u are too focus on arm and/or leg. :)

i swim freestyle with 2 full cycle strokes per breathe. I can do for like 15x50m laps non stop. Is this type of breathing method good? i think for long distance > 20-30laps swimming this may not be recommended. Yes after the swim it sure does get me panting heavily for air.

Breathing in (inhale) has only one method. But blowing out (exhale) varies from quick exhaling to slow exhaling depending on the activities u are doing. For instance, say ask u to exhale and do 5 continuous frog kick compare to doing 10 continuous frog kick, definitely that 10 frog kicking would requires a slow exhaling compare to that 5 frog kick.

current world record holder for 1500m breathes almost every cycle. he clocks 14:31 , about 58s every 100m .

I think except for 50m sprint. you should breath when necessary , the amount of oxygen needed for your flutter kick is huge to keep you at a constant speed. ( if you are practising six beat kick ) .

I think pros of breathing (getting more oxygen to power your legs) far outweights the resistance you created when you breathe, and if you breathe properly ( one google socket in water, the other out of water , see how Phelps breathe ) , the resistance will be significantly reduced. :)

Anyone currently attending adult swimming lessons? Care to intro any good classes or instructors?
Can a beginner benefit from learning total immersion?

Should also train yourself to breath on both sides. Is doable one, just persist breathing on only your unaccustomed side for 3-4 training sessions. By the end, it should be as natural for you as your usual side.

Do speed work (cardio) does most of your workout in any sport discipline. In your breast stroke swimming, I have draw some schedule for you to try on.

1) Swim 100 meter in 2 mins
2) Rest 1 mins
3) Repeat step 1 and 2 for 5 sets.
4) Swim 50 meter in 1 mins
5) Rest 30 sec
6) Repeat step 4 and 5 for 5 sets
7) Wam down.

Have fun.

Gonna try this. Thanks!

nyquist2000 is a good and patient instructor. I have taken a few lessons with him many years ago .Maybe you can pm him to see whether he conducts adult swimming classes.

Interesting thread +1

The last time I had swimming training was during lifeguard training some 2008 in uni. Never got a chance to use those skills [thankfully], now rusty.

Now swim my stamina is rock bottom and my FS is still horrible. 4 kick per cycle, but 50m tire me out. Years of physical inactivity since :o

So how are you coping with the set? Have fun.

I would like to recommend you some drills on front crawls.

1) Blow slowly and longer so you can perform 4 to 6 arm cycle in one breathe and repeat.

By blowing slowly and longer, and perform your arm stroke cycle slowly, it allows your arm to feel the water longer with repeated action so you get to train better.

Once you get comfortable in your 4 to 6 arm cycle per breathe, you can then do a pattern like this, 2 arm cycle per breathe followed by 4 arm cycle per breathe and followed by 6 arm cycle per breathe and repeat.

Be mindful of your head positioning in the water and remember to maintain your body posture thru out.

In this drill set, you will realize you need to varies your breathing. Enjoy and have fun.

i realized when i swim 10-16 laps using free style. My arms are strained. Need to rest 2-3 days before I can swim again. Sometimes the arms feel stiff.

Now i changed my swimming drill... i swim 2*50m of freestyle and 2*50m of breast stroke. Within 30 mins, I swam 20*50m with free style & breast stroke equally. It was alot easier for me though. Will that be effective enough?

I thought I would need to change my drill to 4*50m freestyle and 2*50m breast stroke.

Any thoughts?

It could be cause by chronic tendinitis, common called swimmer's shoulder. It happen when the pull and push phase are not properly done...meaning the swimmer push the water forward too early. Hope this help.

ha yes. I guess so. Think the arm push was not done nicely.
Recently this problem seems to be less severe... I am swimming almost every weekday now......

last mth i barely swim 10-20 laps... since last weekend i managed to swim 30 laps and still maintaining... my swim is mostly 60% freestyle and 40% breaststroke...and the timing getting shorter probably cuz of my breaststroke cuz i m very comfy with breaststroke.

Good to hear you have resolved your problem. Breaststroke is always slower than freestyle as the stroke is not continuous.

Keep up your good workout and keep swimming. Have fun. :)

I've been doing this to remind myself to breathe out fully when my head in the water. I still can't break the habit of breathing in and out at the same time. I do this in a 2-stroke - breathe - 4-stroke - breathe - 6 stroke - breathe - repeat.
