they could be better at streamlining and/or propulsion than others... body composition also affects buoyancy and position in the water - which has a direct effect on drag

you could get a coach to correct your technique...

there are also articles and videos online... but you may end up confused because there are many variations in technique and you'd still need to find out what works for you by trial and error

anyway, where do you normally swim?

Thanks recently I have been reading up articles from US Masters Swimming and watching some youtube videos. I swim in swimming pools at the west side.

i'm not familiar with west side pools, but you can use the teaching pools if the competition pools are too crowded.

i suggest doing drills to work on streamlining and proper pull/kick timing. once you get it right, you should be able to swim a full length (50m) within 80 seconds at moderate effort with a wall push-off.

Currently I am working on improving efficiency and swimming with as slow stroke as possible which is difficult. I am really going back to basics.

I read that a highly skilled swimmer can swim a 25-yard pool in 6-8 strokes (vs 24-30 for normal). That is insane.

I still pant and rest every 50m :(. Last time can't even swim 50m.

Do you breathe every 2 strokes or 3 strokes or what. I see video sometimes they can breathe every multiple stroke like nothing. I run out of breath.

for breaststroke, i generally breathe every stroke but with a lower stroke rate and longer glide than most casual swimmers :o

you can experiment with breathing every other stroke, but you should reduce the effort to avoid running out of breath. so you'll probably need more strokes to complete a length.

on the non-breathing stroke, aim to have more of your body under the surface of the water to be more streamlined....

btw, don't assume the people in those instruction videos normally swim like that all the time - the videos could well been edited to show only the best examples =:p

Balancing your body and making use of your core is vital in freestyle swims to make it effortless. Once you start practising your core balance, you will swim so gracefully that you will always have not enough time to swim.

it's not literally "effortless" :s8:

if you look at his arms, the hands accelerate towards the hips.... the underwater views show this clearly even though above water things might seem "effortless" :s13:

swimming in itself won't increase your body fat level. generally speaking, exercise can help to improve appetite but weight gain is due to energy consumption being higher than energy expenditure

since you mentioned you're skinny.... you seem to be the type that doesn't gain muscle easily.

a strength training routine combined with some endurance exercise and a proper diet is what you should be doing. this will help you get stronger and gain muscle. if you're serious enough, join a club and get coached.

if you look at high level competitive swimmers, they have broad backs and shoulders.... it's what makes them so fast.

Yea. True. They hit gym before swim?

elites would do separate workouts with at a rest period in between if doing both gym and swimming on the same day.

but at club/squad level (like what you see in public pools), they normally just swim.... furiously :s22:

To reach that level of coordination and executing it looking "effortless isn't easy:s22:

I would love to be able to swim so effortless that it has no cardio benefits, but every time always breathe harder than running :s22:.

Freestyle need to improve, breast stroke even worse, can't glide at all.
