I don’t think 4G will be phased out anytime soon. We have to consider both local users and foreigners, if their SIM or eSIM doesn’t support 5G SA, or if their plan is limited to 4G, they wouldn’t be able to connect at all without 4G.

Once our 5G NSA is officially shut down, the only networks left will be 4G with VoLTE and 5G with VoNR, since 2G and 3G are already gone.

Who knows, perhaps within the next two years, all phones sold in Singapore will be required to support 5G, any device that only supports 4G may no longer be allowed for sale.

Not allowed for sale is not the same as not allow to be used.

in my limited experience, the phone may support VoNR, but the telco may not support that phone, so effectively, from the user's POV, not supported

You can’t just use “planned obsolescence” for everything, otherwise we’ll still be stuck with using candles cause moving electric light would mean planned obsolescence for candles too.

Moving from 2G to 3G to 4G to 5G has plenty of spectrum efficiency benefits in this case.

If the brand owners of the handset dun want to provide updates to allow conformity then consumer just buy again, they just eol the model easier

One reference about potential 4G shutdown by T-Mobile. It mentions that 4G LTE network may still be alive in year 2035 for IoT and Industrial applications. For typical applications, they are migrating away from 4G LTE in 2026/2027 to go with 5G SA but the article does not mention the exact shutdown time.

And the other reports say 6G will start in 2028. And 5G SA to 6G migration efforts will be less than 4G to 5G.

Per the document, T-Mobile has already started dismantling its 4G network with plans to use those frequencies for 5G over the next two years to support 5G Standalone (5G SA). Currently, 5G SA is the main version of 5G and doesn't rely on 4G infrastructure.

The document notes that LTE will exist on T-Mobile networks until 2035 to support legacy devices, likely IoT products and industrial applications, but performance will be significantly degraded.

I tend to think we do not need to worry too much about 4G LTE network shutdown any time soon in Singapore, maybe that will only happen in 2030.

I made sure main devices in the family to support 5G since late 2021.

Late 2021: Realme X50 5G (myself ) and Realme 7 5G (MIL).

2022: Poco M4 5G (FIL), Poco X4 GT (myself) and iPhone 14 (wife)

2024. Poco X6 Pro X 2 (daughter, and wife's backup phone )

2025: Poco X7 Pro (myself)

On the other hand, I bought Poco C75 and Poco C85 this year since they are pretty cheap, not used as the main phone though. Both are 4G phones.

BTW, VoWiFi works fine for both Singtel SIM Only plan and M1 Maxx 5G plan.

maxx also support VoNR. Tried calling and it shows vo5g or vonr

Heng ah. Luckily i did not buy the poco x7 pro which was on offer during 11.11.
I hope that Poco X8 variants will support VoNR.

AFAIK, Samsung S23+ can display Vo5G icon on Maxx.

As of now, only for data. Voice still needs to use 4G (VoLTE) or WiFi (VoWiFi).

Very few Android phones support VoNR as of now.
