actually Sony does have very good phone. not sure why everyone going for Samsung?? marketing?? Samsung skin is tooooo heavy. and don't even have the double tap features.

Some people are still surprised to learn that Sony makes smartphones.

Marketing is Sony's Achilles heel, truth to be told.
Samsung is strong in its marketing, that's why even with people complaining its bloated TouchWiz or its recent microSD and removal battery saga, if Samsung were to spam their advertisement with the pros of their phone, like a refreshed beautiful design, fast processor etc., people will still eat into it and get their phone.

If Sony were to put in more marketing on their phone, maybe like better camera for their Z5 series, first 4K screen for phone for Z5 Premium, ultra-thin 0.8mm bezel for C5 Ultra etc., maybe more people will be interested to get a Sony phone.

But they have yet to be profitable in their mobile division.
It can't go on forever.

Personally I hope they turnaround. It would be a shame if we lost Sony.

Sales person I spoke to at singtel retailer said z5 should be available this Saturday. No word yet on the compact.

Actually how many will use raw? Maybe some will use for a while and after that back to jpg. Number continue is very very small and the money use to make raw available is not justify for the business return.
How often will you use raw? What is the purpose? Time spend on processing the pic with it?

if camera experience is not important in a smart phone, we won't see the brilliant performances from Samsung, LG and Apple. HTC wouldn't bother screwing itself with "Ultrapixel". Google wouldn't bother with the huge sensor size for their new Nexus.

of course we should expect good quality in phone camera.

1) it's Sony. these guys provide the sensors to best OEMs this year for camera performance (Apple, LG, Samsung).

2) it's a new camera sensor. admit it, the G Lens nonsense from Z1 to Z3+ is garbage. on paper it sounds powerful, but in reality Those phones are the lousiest flagships in camera performance. with a new sensor and so much hype with Hybrid AF etc, obviously we would want better performance.

3) it's a flagship. Z5 is on par in prices with S6 at launch, and even more expensive than the G4. in any case, its creation is to fight with S6/M9/G4/6S for a spot in the premium tier. why would I not want the camera to on par with the other players? what's so different about Sony that I must compromise camera performance from the king of camera sensors manufacturing?

so wake up and stop pretending like it's okay for Sony Z-Series to produce shitty photos. it's not. not in 2015.

It is human nature to be greedy and ask for more.
After the desire is satisfied, everyone will go back and use the inferior option.

Simply ask around and see how many people use phone camera to shoot in HD, FHD or 4K, when all options are available.

People are happy when DxO said Sony phones are not producing good phone cameras.

First of all.... Camera Experience =/= Picture quality. Yes Picture quality plays a part, but things like ease of use, speed of capture, shutter lag etcetc adds up to the experience. Your entire post only hound on picture quality , which i have earlier stated is very, very subjective.

Also Personally the shittest Flagship camera to me is the HTC One Series. That one ;;; Abit sad, cause they were trying the ultra pixel thing....but... i guess execution didn;t carry out properly.

I'm not even considering HTC when I compare image quality... poor HTC lol.

and yes camera experience and picture quality are different things. maybe I worded wrongly, but I meant the entire process - frm taking the phone out, to launching the camera, to snapping a photo, to have it saved to the gallery and finally to have it look good.

what you mentioned like ease of use, capture speed/latency are absent in Sony. let me rectify first by saying that at least from YouTube and what I've observed at 313@Somerset, Sony nailed the AF speed even without laser AF and those gimmicks, so kudos.

now my best friend, her bf, her sister and her sister's bf all are using Sony because of my persuasion but she always tells me the camera isn't good. to her (the average consumer), Sony Xperia phone cameras are slow to launch, slow at focusing and take average photos. now some fan boys won't like it but I think the perspective of a fan boy comapred to what the average consumer thinks are always world's apart.

next, how is the Xperia camera app capable of providing a holistic camera experience on a smartphone? let me give a few examples:

1) no true Manual mode. "Manual" mode tweaks a few things like ISO, WB which are weirdly negated when you switch to certain modes. but wait! you say, Apple's camera app has no Manual mode too. yeah they dont, but their Auto mode is one of the best around and do you really want Sony to be comapred to Apple?

2) small details like, exposure slider and HDR toggle are not omnipresent. you have to often dig through the settings just to find basic things like this that are already in their competitors' camera apps.

3) most frustrating of all: the extreme stupidity of why using Quick Launch = SA mode I will never understand, especially if you last used Manual mode. like ??? I don't get it

4) I agree that Sony Xperia has decent camera sensors that can take decent photos, but only if you set everything up correctly - the scene, the camera settings like scene mode, ISO, WB, HDR etc. and then finally you will get something comparable.

but look, most people just gonna point-and-shoot. this is the reality of this era and smartphones. people wanna take it out, take photos of the sunset, their dinner, their friends, their babies. photography has evolved from taking model photos and landscapes to capturing your life.

thus the average person has no technical ability to "set up" their camera like how Sony needs to be in order to be good. they only know, launch, tap, shoot. who does that the best? your answer will tell you why that particular phone is so popular.

again, I must emphasize I am not anti-Sony. I said it before, I'll say it again. I've used every Z-Series phone except the Z1 Compact and Z Ultra and I like so many things like build quality, water resistance and battery life.

but look, camera is one aspect that an OEM can never run away from and Sony sadly is horrible at it, ironically. I've said it before too that it's very frustarting because these guys DESERVE to do well but they don't.

camera on a smartphone to me is just an emergency solution when I really need to take photo.

put it this way: if a professional photographer is using the best camera smartphone to do your wedding portraits... are you OK with it?
