Tote bags still "in"?

I think Tote bags can be quite practical. Unfortunately, tote bags tend to give off too much feminine vibe to be suitable for men. It's ok if you are carrying groceries home from the supermarket but to have a tote style bag as a regular office/weekend bag, men risk giving off an effeminate image and advertising that they have a disordered sexual orientation.

I've been wondering what it is about Tote bags that make them look so effeminate. I suspect it is the long handles, delicate features and tapering/rounded sides. To make a tote bag work for men, I think men need to look for a tote style bag that has short handles, a more squarish/rectangular shape and larger/rougher detailing.

As an illustration, both of the following bags taken off the web are described as tote bags for men but it's quite obvious which one looks more suitable for men.

I guess this is one of those things you'll find everyone having a different opinion about. Like you say, the design plays a big part.

I've seen guys pulling off tote bags without looking effeminate and those that do. All in the execution.

Messenger Bag - is Chrome that bad?

Looking for a messenger bag for my office/outing/casual/gym use. Was checking on Crumpler, but eventually attracted by Buran from Chrome Industries (SGD260). Reason? Sturdy (buckle looks cool) and less chance of bumping into a same bag on street.

However, some reviews in official site complained about the buckle as a design flaw, considering its weight and position (pressure point eventually slipped from padding to buckle).

Is it really so bad that I have to go back to Crumpler?

the buckle isn't that bad unless you anyhow throw your bag, drop it etc. It will obviously damage the buckle. Weight yes overall it is heavier than crumpler, position wise not really it depends what you carry and how you pack them inside.

Not a brand ***** any kind of bag will do. As long as the canvas/denim is soft. I'm using it to store probably a few books. Budget preferably below 200. But cheaper the better. Thanks
