Efficiency is one thing to look out for.

Build quality, rail/ripple regulation are some other performance aspects to take note of too.

Then there's also things like noise level, cable length, sleeving, connectors and general aesthetics to consider too.

Youre right about that bryan, i didnt realise that until you explained it to me a couple of months back .. I used to only think about efficiency ...

But all those things are important too .. And dont forget how much the 12V rails can carry.. some 500W powr supplies have less on them than a 450W ones or lower...

Guess we have to do more research not just looking at the efficiency. They are so many good brands out now so, kinda hard to judge which one the best. Even those expensive model doesn't mean good also.

Any ideas which PSU would be idea for a 9800GX2? I am abit confuse. On the box it says nvidia recommend 580w but XFX recommend 630w. Does tat means XFX have added "extras"? Would a 650w PSU suffice?
I do not had any extra hardware. just the 2 hard disk and the typical components.

500-600w should be a good.

Try Corsair HX series or Aerocool Horsepower series.. both give better value for money than the silverstone.

The corsair HX520W should be enough to run a 9600GT on sli .
im not betting on this but i think it should be enough for a 8800GT SLI as well.
I would choose the corsair over aerocool cos of the Warranty.. otherwise they are both smashing power supplies..

ok. so i am really really really slow coming to this thread but decided to drop by to have a look to see if it is my PSU which is killing my RAMs in the past.

Killed 1 set on my asus striker extreme and another set on my dfi lp dk p35t2rs.

thought at 1st that my Cooler Master Real Power Pro 850w is teh suckz but realised that there is a difference between the modular and non-modular one and that my PSU is not so bad after all.

The Seperation should be wider and ER should have made a header. Heh!

Gotta admit the Cooler Master Real Power Pro 850w is pretty and really really silent. Wish it had a power on/off switch though.

yep! me realised that "accidentally" a few months back when i powered off and my eneloop usb charger was still recharging!

Gotta admit after over a year of using this wonderful PSU, i never had any problems, it is slient as any thing. Love it, no matter what the ratings say.

I'm going to get a new GC soon, either getting a 8800GT or a 9800GTX. I have some questions about the power consumption of the GC.

Can my current PSU Cooler Master eXtreme Power Plus 460W handle the 8800GT or the 9800GTX? Thanks

depends on what other components you are using i guess but i think that for the 9800gtx maybe get a 600-650w PSU? Not that expensive nowadays.
Oh, and i would choose the 9800gtx especially if you do not intend to change gpu for next 2-3 years

like i said, bro. really depends on what other components you have running in your rig. My suggestion is just invest in a 600w PSU and no worries liao

Yup better state out your system specs..

the 460w should be enough for 8800gt..

if you want to run a 9800gtx.. try to get a psu with 2xpci-e 6pin connectors

and maybe state your budget etc so we can recommend you something

bryanwumf is more knowledgeable than me but i would say that 460w can barely make it especially if you intend to run SLi or add more hdd or even plug external hdd in. not forgetting any additional fans and other bling bling which you might want to add.

485w probably no worries.

however, if you have about 160-170$ to spare, might as well get a 600w corasir modular or 620w sliverstone modular (potterhouse only 168$ for both). Like this if you upgrade next year or even year after, no worries about power.

Yeah i am one of those who advocate more power than less power...in fact i think my psu too much juice for my components

yes can.. but it won't be enough to SLI 8800GT in the future if you decide to do it.

If you want to prepare for SLI, Corsair HX620, Aerocool 650w would be good choices for under $170.
