Oh wow, thanks for taking the time to explain these to me. I actually prefer that the shop assistant to explain it to me, just wanna double confirm. ( I just love to read on and do research beforehand ) So I guess most of the shops do have the manual testing & machines uh. Looks like I'll be prolly getting the Zeiss then.

Out of curiosity, I'm also looking up on IC Berlin and I noticed that their frame are sorta *curve* looking. So I guess I could pair up IC Berlin with Hoya spherical lenses? Or I could safely says that Zeiss do make spherical lenses too, it's just that reading up on these kinda confuse me :s11:

that's the reason why hoya is commonly used
zeiss don't have spherical 1.6, it's RX I think ever since they embarked on the aspherical path for stock lenses

hoya still has it as non RX , cost is lower

Hi evening everyone,

Seems to me that the circular frame, vintage spectacle are picking up the trend. When i was in bkk last week, it was almost everywhere to be seen.
But come to sg, theres not much variety around. Anyone happen to know any spectacle shop that does have a variety of circular frames / vintage specs?

if you're looking to spend on the frame , i'll suggest paragon/ngee ann city /ion

if not queensway shopping centre

otherwise for fashion only , bugis ---> they have lots of retro style frames you can buy for $10

this u gotta ask other experts liao,
but there are different types of Hoya lens, made in shanghai or made in Japan.

other details hopefully someone else will answer u.

Made in shanghai and made in japan got px difference or not??? If china made cheaper by half i dont mind, but same px then no-no ler. But i think nowadays tings are inferior lehz, best safest optio is to choose the more expensive option. I recently bought a HDMI cable for $30 got spoilt in less than a week. So v hard to find good yet cheap stuff, dont u all agree mah??!

If u guys decide to take zeiss lens dont forget tell the optician u want duravision platinum coating & superb lenses. Alot of shops still dont know that zeiss already has superb lens for 1.74 SV, because even the latest catalogue book not updated yet. But if they call the supplier they will tell the shop they have superb lenses cost follow the same as clarity pricing. Remember ask for superb lens, cos clarity lens may not be as clear. Individualised is bit too far fetched i feel, unless you have $ to burn.

Comparing hoya double aspherical to zeiss superb i feel that zeiss superb seems on par with hoya dbl aspherical. And px is lower. Hoya SV 1.74 dbl AS will cost close to 1k but Zeiss 1.74 Superb for my high astig only $680. And clarity quality wise Zeiss better except that scratch resistance not as good. I have 2 minor scratches but i dont care cos dont really affect vision and the BLUE RESUDUAL reflection just way too cool.

As stupid as this sounds

Hongkong

They don't have an actual distribution office here. The salesman fOr Alain mikli from Hongkong comes by every now and then to show goods and take orders

One of the largest collections I've see was at millennia walk for designer eyewear...... 6 years ago
They had a "shop in shop "somewhere in Singapore around that time and according to the complaint I heard.. Other retailers were unhappy that shop in shop had the latest stuff so quickly and readily available .. I don't know much else hopefully that millennia walk outlet is the one my senior was unhappy about.
It was pretty quiet there when I last walked by... The mall was going to go through renovation.

Last resort. Is you're super chummy with your regular store and they carry mikli/starck
And when the salesman comes with his suitcase full of frames
By some miracle your chummy pal allows you to try there.
That's the likeliest possible largest range of starck frames

Otherwise Hongkong. As the distributor is in Hongkong
Most retailers Wouldbt like to carry more than 20-30 pieces that's around 10+ pieces each for plastic & metal selections for a brand which isn't as hot as say Oakley?

This is quite hard to answer....

Because there's a lens called Trinity. Supposedly the most advanced progressive launched by Hoya
Then when yingluck first took over.... Thailand had a big flood
I was flying over Thailand back then and that's the first time I've seen a real flood (and from the air as well )
Then Eh.... They couldn't deliver on the orders for Trinity lenses because the factory at Thailand was flooded.
They were supposed to have a super 24 hour lab/factory at Malaysia... Which surprisingly doesn't produce Trinity lenses

That caused a bit of a backlash..... Because from supplier to salesman to shop to staff to customers..... The story was... "made in Japan " ..... Then when crisis struck... Story changed to "finished in Japan "
A lot of angry people felt cheated
I don't know much more other than that

But unless it made sense. It's rare to manufacture things in Europe / first world countries due to the cost
Like say Duravision coating. The last time I ordered the lenses they must be made in Germany. Because only German have the facilities.
But there's no way they would continue manufacturing in Germany if there's demand here enough to fuel a new manufacturing plant here
They along with all other labs like Hoya, Essilor Have manufacturing plants all over Asia. I know Malaysia has lab/ factory for Hoya
And the big labs are all in Thailand
China's a definite thing. Australia India
The future is going to get everything moved to Asia

WHY EVERYTHING ALSO HK? WHEN CAN SG MKT CATCH UP?

I GOT NO CHOICE BUT TO ASK U COZ NOBODY IN THIS FORUM THREAD COULD ANSWER ME. I THINK I GOT MY ANSWER ALREADY. MEANS NOT MANY SHOPS GOT THE CASH TO PAY FOR THE EXPENSIVE & NOT SO POPULAR STARCK. MEANS I HAVE TO GO BACK TO THE SAME DARN SHOP WHICH MISHANDLES MY STARCK FRAME TO GET FUTURE STARCK EYES. THEY GOT MY LENSES WRONG PRESCRIPTION AS WELL AND I HAVE TO GO ANOTHER SHOP TO RE-DO. GUESS NEXT TIME I HAVE TO MAKE SURE THEY SEND TO LAB TO DO. I SUPPOSED ZEISS LAB IS ACCURATE, BUT MISHANDLING IS A PROBLEM.

VERY VERY DISAPPOINTED.

DONT CARE where its manufactured, as long its good and cheap. If made in china make sure they sell it cheaper and not maintain same costs, unless quality is still maintained then no issues.

yes, hoya confirmed have lab in KL. BUT not all batches of hoya coatings are good, i have one that has coating problems adter a year or so. The lenses are a bit more glaring when compared to zeiss. The most important aspect nowadays is still the cost. Whoever can keep cost lower then go for that brand. Raise cost without much improvement then i switch brand. Just like hoya new coating HVLL is overrated. Lens increase cost about 100-200dol. Decided to switch to zeiss which i can get higher index 1.74 at cheaper cost than hoya's lower index 1.67

they say hoya does more research than zeiss, but i dont buy that story.

their research follow different directions, and sometimes don't match what the customers think

in sg if the product doesn't make money , it wouldn't be ordered

you need to order 20-30 pieces of starck
but if you're not specialising in it and not known for it you may only be selling 2-3 pieces a month and that's if your staff pushes it, in competition with so many other brands which earn better or easier

I am getting a new pair of progessive lens. Most shops I visited recommended Essilor brand of lens.

Is there a reason why Essilor is more 'popular'?

by right not supposed to use machine, but even if they did, they still need to double check and use a trial frame to trial the prescription

I have seen cases where shops simply use the auto-refractor (the one where you look at an image inside the machine) without refining the power.

If anyone is interested in slightly more details; assuming the autorefractor machine is properly calibrated with the right settings, the machine calculates the power for emmetropia (i.e. the eye looking at optical infinity). However in most cases, refractionists will leave the distal end of the depth of field at optical infinity. :s22: This gives a wider range of clear vision without requiring to accommodate, thus improving patient comfort.

In a nutshell, your refractionist needs to manually adjust and refine so it achieves a balance between being optically correct and getting a power that is comfortable to wear.

optical lenses are made using 2 prisms either base facing together or opposite directions
power is increased by increasing prism ----->making lens thicker
hence high power low refractive index= thick lenses +hi prism distortion at the side. just ask those with high power to push their lenses sideways and up down
instant blurness
so with hi power + aspherical design you need to do pd/oc ht
to place the focal point in front of your eyes
one case i did, -3.75 18ht for 1.5
customer found the glasses blur .... turns out lab did 15ht for me :s22:

Insider spotted :s12:

Material wise 1.6 has better Optical quality. So if the difference isn't that big between 1.6/1.67 1.6 is a better choice

Can I add for the benefit of everyone reading, polycarbonate (1.59) is probably the one that gives the most chromatic aberration - where you see fringes of light around the edges of objects. So avoid it.

there were pc lenses before . usually introduced as anti emi lenses +uv
then there was the argument only crt monitors emit emi
others argue there's no such thing since we're sitting infront of the computer ... wouldn't the whole body get bombarded?

as for blue light , it's supposed to be proven to be "harmful"
plus other industrial uses like making chicks grow faster
you cannot deny the fact blue light is harmful . but as for a miracle pair of lenses which block blue light and prevent macular degeneration ..
you're better off not using your smart phone/tablet all the time .
the main concern should be the damage to your neck/spine/back which you will feel immediately

Agreed. The apparent hype over the blue light feels out of proportion.

But still, I am sure there will be people eager to protect their eyes from the harmful blue light while going out under the sun without sunblock. :s13:

They do lots of marketing - in cinemas, buses, TV, online.

mitsueki.wordpress [dot] com/tag/essilor-crizal/ (too little post cows, cannot post link...)

And of course if the salesperson is getting a good commission, why not introduce Essilor to you :s13:

Who says Hoya does more research than Carl Zeiss? :s13:

Hoya stock lenses done in Guangzhou and Thailand, RX (special order lenses) done in Malaysia.

For stock lenses, not much variation in coating quality between the batches, but they have different series, much like how some graphics cards or processors have the same components but are sold as different models. So it really depends on what your shop gave you.

Why not just buy the Starck frame and then go to your preferred shop to get the lenses done. ;)
