You definitely need a Gigabit router.
100Mbits can only get you 12.5MBytes per sec.

Whereas with a decent harddisk, this router could easily do 30-40 MBytes per sec for read and write I'm guessing.

If you already bought your router don't need to get another one, just buy n-port Gigabit switch (n being the number of ports you need) and hook up to your router's own switch.

I am using a 300Mbits router....but I am getting a speed of around 9 plus mbytes per sec...What is the speed I am suppose to get on my router and how to make it do 20 - 30 mbytes

I'm assuming it's a Wireless N router? but only 100Mbits switch built in?

hmm that means Wireless Clients to Wireless Clients can manage 300Mbits but anything on the wired side will do 100Mbits at max. You NAS connects on the wired side therefore anything connected to it (wired/wireless) will do 12.5Mbits at max, which explains maybe why you get 9?

Ok, here's the deal I forgot about wireless clients. In order to get the max possible speeds for both wired and wireless clients you will need to change the router.
If you add a switch only the wired clients will get the advantage.

Gigabit switches cost about $100 for 8 port, around $70 for 5 port?
The popular Gigabit Wireless-N router that people use here is the D-link DIR655 (to my knowledge) that can be had for approx $200
The other brands with Wireless-N + Gigabit switch go for around $150.

Hi weap0nx, i did not try to time the speeds cos i'm only on a 100Mb router. I'm running single RAID 5 with 3 x 1.5Tb WD green (WD15EARS-00Z), 2790Gb usable space with XFS

Hi SkimMilk, you using WD15EARS-00Z? Is it the one with the format 4k sectors? Does it runs into problem when use with the NAS? I read that it has some issues

2790GB usable space??? but only about 2500 plus plus can use for storage right? I think mine is about the same showing as you, just that I am figuring where the missing 200gb plus gone to..
any idea on this?

sorry Andrew, don't own it YET. just been reading and studying this device.
Tempted to take other brands since i have bigger budge but keep coming back to the n0503, even if the software isn't that good the hardware is just too impressive to overlook. Software can mod and update , hardware is permanent.

Any offers coming up?

Yes plus this sort of damage is dangerous as it could spoil more than 1 disk and if that happened data is bye bye.

Use good surge protection at bare minimum, consider getting UPS to fight sudden power outage !
Damage by surge or brownouts is not that common but you never know man. Good surge protection is just a small price to pay for insuring priceless your priceless data.

Hi Jupiter, no problems with the NAS but then, it took ages (somewhere > 24hrs) to create the raid.

The usable space is the total space usable, not less. the missing 200gb is because of computation.

Manufacturers state 1.5Tb == 1 500 000 000 bytes.
But in computing terms, 1Mb = 1024bytes, so a 1.5Tb in manufacturer's terms is roughly around 1.39Tb in computer terms. (take 1500000000 and divide by 1024 3 times)

This explains your lost space. This is true for all harddisks...

I actually bought a APC Surge protector during the last show at $29. Forgot all about UPS + NAS. Most probably will be getting a UPS in the near future.

look at APC UPS backups bah. They are sold in SLS and Challenger.

OK just sharing some thoughts not saying that I want to sell you all the higher end of the Thecus.

The Thecus 4200 has BBM ( Battery Backup Module ) which still can run for 10mins and provide a graceful shutdown.

I'd still prefer to use an APC UPS, got product warranty too.

Could you help us check if Thecus NAS work with APC's ES series? their documentation not so good, don't know which models work and which don't. is it safe to assume that if they have USB connectivity, the UPS should work?

I think a UPS would be more appropriate as it can also continue to supply your desktop with the required power, in addition to the NAS. However, I think you would need quite a high VA model. I have (okay.. had... smoke came out of it and it's now a door-stop) the 1500VA model, but it was used for only the desktop and monitor.

haa.. i had the lower end APC model, which should have enough time for you to react and shutdown anything. but then, it konked out after ~1.5yrs of usage.
