Thanks for sharing. wow the complexity in that movement is indeed astonishing. very intricate. yeah i'm still very new in my watch collecting journey and have only been exposed to rolex which doesn't have the prettiest of movements which is why I assume their entire range is all closed case.

my current interest in horology is also quite shallow in the sense that my appreciation for mechanical watches mainly lies in that they can perform various functions from just kinetic energy from the wearer. don't have much exposure to the trinity or Lange outside of videos from Ted Baldassarre, bark and jack. it has yet to progress to the stage where i can appreciate finishes like you do.

The shape and design of Lange watches reminds me of a pocket watch actually. They all seemed quite dressy and look like meticulous crafted pieces of art. too dressy for me but then again, also cannot afford lol
Lange watches all pocket watch inspired so no surprise there if they look like pocket watches 😂

Breguet high end
Blancpain for me. Mid range. Because I can afford it. 😂
I just feel these 2 brands like more value for money. Dunno y swatch group dun merge them or throw more money to compete in the high horology level

marketing and branding
and since its "affordable", most people would know about it
to some, 10k is alot of money on a watch so they would think wow, must be ultra luxury
but there's 100k and 1m watches - and those really not alot people would know.

like you would know ferrari and lambo, but outside of those, there's bugatti, pagani, koenigsegg, hennessy etc. not alot people would know
Indeed. A few of my friends who like rolex don’t even know many other brands outside of it. One doesn’t even know Tudor nor it’s relations with Rolex 😂

Once you touch other brands like AS or Lange & Hayne, you’ll know Rolex is meh 🤣

Though the bracelet is one of the better ones out there

Either rolex has done very well on its branding and marketing or the rest are not aggressive enough in the Asian market..

I think most of us grow up with the perception that wearing Rolex is successful and rich 😂
Mentality passed down from our grandparent's generation I feel. Especially for the middle income to low tier rich people (by low tier I dont mean they poor la, maybe between HNWI and UHNWI status). You see all the uncle and auntie all have Rolex on their wrist. I believe in Singapore context, Rolex is the watch where "you never actually own a Rolex, you merely look after it for the next generation", more than PP haha

Rolex perpetuated this very well over the years. But in reality even if you make $3k a month a steel Rolex is still well within your reach if you choose to scrimp and save for it.

Hmmm…
THG also have 40 months installment. So it is within reach but it’s a matter of getting an allocation..

Doesn’t matter if Rolex is just a mid range luxury brand. It’s human nature for people to want to be associated with brands that people recognises instantly. It’s a bit like Mercedes, they don’t make the highest range luxury car, although the brand is known to make good quality, durable and highly reliable cars with a certain level of prestige. Prestige isn’t comparable to a Bentley for sure but the C and E class is instantly recognisable and offering what a car owner needs. Rolex is just that, everyone knows what is the Rolex brand, the 5 match sticks logo and the durability and high reliability that comes with it (very common for a Rolex sports model to go without needing a servicing for 13-14 years). It is still very common that a rich man may buy PP and ALS out of their love for the movement, the highest craftsmanship that goes behind making that watch, but he would still have at least a few of the Rolex he will wear almost daily and he wouldn’t abandon it just because Rolex is a mid tier luxury brand.
I once shared my purchase of PP AC in this thread and someone actually questioned my decision to spend 65k on it, saying nobody will take a second look at the PP that I bought but a highly popular Rolex sports model will attract glances from people in the public.
Why is Rolex so successful? It is not just marketing but I think they do earn that recognition as they do make very good watches. Good watches not in terms of craftsmanship like PP, ALS but just very good.

I remember your PP AC post haha. But then we also don’t buy for other people. If it strikes up a convo, great, if not, we enjoy what is in our collection :)

Yep, to clarify, I’m not affected by what that person said. I do like the watch I bought and I bought it for myself. My sharing of this is more to say that there is a reason why Rolex is so highly sought after and why various people can just buy nothing but only Rolexes even when they are wealthy enough to appreciate the higher tier luxury brands like PP, ALS. It’s like cars, Bentley doesn’t always appeal to the rich people, very often, E class or S class is sufficient for them.
