Yes for TRA.
Not likely for hsr, unless you are buying those with seats allocation, then there is a possibility. If you buy free seatings, you can buy anytime and hop on any train. But do look for seats at Cabin 10,11,12. The rest of those seats from 1-9 are allocated seats.

A brief introduction about the train & seat types of TRA

You cannot assign seat if you book on their website. But you can ask TRA ticket staff to assign the seat if you buy the ticket on spot

Agree to your point.

Below are my two cents worth for you.

With such an introduction like this, perhaps it will confuse many others to think that Tze-Chiang(Ordinary) class belongs to the Semi-Express train train pricing.

Perhaps you will consider placing a 2nd category between the Semi-Express and Express service, thus dividing it into 4 classes should you need to.

Bump up this thread...

Wonder can buy over the counter 1-2day in advance for either TRA or HSR tickets?

I used to buy my TRA tickets over the counter a day before I travel, just wonder if this is still possible?

After all, after such a long while things might change right?

Was toying the idea to buy online but decided not, and check if it's still possible to buy in advance over the counter or at those convenience stores

Maybe Taichung or Kaohsiung to/fro Taipei
HSR, easier then.
Train-wise if it is not peak then not as bad.
But I will not bet on local train unless you have lots of time to play around with.

peak period would mean local public holidays? As I read tra or hsr tickets are always in high demand during local holiday periods

Definitely.
And their Holidays are different from us.
Very hard to follow.
