Let me narrow down the statement you made for clarity:
it will not solve the root of the problem - that being our nation's immigration policy, or perhaps our low birth rate which necessitates the use of large numbers of FT.
This is propaganda - the solution to SG's low birthrate is to import in a large numbers of FTs.
Will the additional 100k new citizens per year not grow old?
30-40 years down the road, these batch of new citizens will get old and create even a bigger problem and burden to your kids and the next generation; not to mention the tons of socio-cultural disunity that will seriously undermine SG's unity and social fabric along the way.
Why does LHL not take the longer-term hit of taking the time and effort to develop and cultivate Singaporeans to a world-class skill level?
Why does he choose to take the myopic and quick 'plug-and-play' solution of allowing more FTs year after year?
So the possible solution?
Yes, immigration of the global brightest is part of it; but not the mediocre ones who could barely make it anywhere else in the world. Reject definitely the likes of Yang Yin and Nisha etc.
Next, lower the cost of living - such that the average young couple will not feel the financial stresses - of owing a home, affording children and their education as well as needing to take care of their parents' needs financially.
If a young couple could knock off work by 6pm and need not worry about the finances of paying off their 30-year HBD loan and parents' medical/living expenses, the additional leisure time on hand would naturally be spent pro-creating like bunnies.
Problem with the PAP Government under LHL is that besides having everything cost-based; he adds and passes on Government's part of the cost to the people, whilst allowing foreigners to free-load.
What are these 'Government Cost'? Let's list some:
Land-cost for HDBs ~ just ask how much does the land originally cost the Government;
$1billion taxpayers' dollars on buses for transport companies owned by Temasek;
National security cost ~ who perform national service, how much does those NS manpower cost? are they paid the market rate for labour cost for their time/effort spent?;
Does FTs pay a proportionately higher taxes for NOT needing to perform NS whilst enjoying the security blanket every night when Singaporean sons stood post?
