UOB doesn't decide what MCC shopee uses. Its the bank/payment provider that setup the payment gateway for shopee which determines which MCC the merchant is categorised under. UOB can then use this pre-determined MCC to award points/cashback accordingly.I don't really understand what happened though. Out of the two purchases I identified as not eligible, indeed one of them is Shopee Supermarket. But the other is not, just Shopee Mall.
I thought it's the bank that decides the MCC? If UOB doesn't want to accept Shopee Supermarket, for example, they should state clearly on their website as an exclusion...
My best guess is UOB probably gives out the additional 5% or 6.67% rebates for shoppe based on MCC 5262 Marketplaces. Since Shopee supermarket (previously also MCC 5262) has recently changed their MCC to 5411 Supermarkets, the rebate system probably screwed up.
