Anyone has any idea if the 10x overseas spend cap of $2K is by card or by account? eg. Does the 2k cap apply to principal card & supp card = 4k or is it an accumulation of the spending on both cards? Thanks!

Let this be a warning to those holding Prepaid cards not to abuse banks' credit cards for their top ups. UOB, OCBC already clamped down on this.

What difference does it make to a bank if I top up $1000 to some prepaid card and then use that for a purchase, or whether I charge the same $1000 directly and skip the prepaid card?

Because you can get a refund from the prepay card and get the points without spending a cent. Please give the banks some credit.

I am lost here: You give bank frequent flyer miles and bank give you $? Does SQ buy back frequent flyer miles and give you $?

ANZ give you money like UOB at a much better rate. SQ let you use miles to redeem for any flights at its cash equivalent of 1c per mile. Just comparing the value of miles, UOB is not giving that fantastic a rate.

This is nothing to do with the Banks in Singapore, but the way the merchants operate in China. For them, I suspect they do not know (or don't care) to select transaction amount in CNY. It happened to me several times using CitiBank, HSBC and UOB Cards. As such, sometimes, I just use UOB PrivMiles Amex or Citi PM AMEX cards in China since for these transactions, it will always be billed in CNY, as AMEX at the moment do not have DCC facility.

Yeah, I use UOB PRVI Miles Amex in China. The potential of being charged with DCC and earning super low miles is too high. This is potentially worse for UOB Visa Signature since the DCC'ed amount does not count towards the $1k minimum foreign spend.

This is still viable in the Tier 1 city where there is decent Amex acceptance, especially in areas where you are likely to find laowai; tourist & business districts. For foreign hotel chains, this is also doable. Do note that even these have the DCC traps as well. However, I have had reasonable success writing back later and having them reverse the charges and re-charge in CNY (did this with a Hilton and a Hyatt).

Outside of that, you just try your luck or pay with cash. Rule of thumb I use in China is that as long as you see SGD on the slip, have them cancel the transaction. 99.99% of the time, these will be DCC'ed regardless of what you circle, cross, tick or tell them & you will have 0 to no chance of getting your bank in Singapore to do anything about it.

how to know if kena bill the dcc? assuming the receipt comes out in their local currency and u sign (eg ur in the states and it comes out USD), is this safe to sign?

then via internet banking how to see if u were charged correctly in their local currency or kena dcc?

1. for dcc no mention of the overseas amount just in SGD?
or
2. for non dcc, internet banking statement will show transacted foreign currency and transacted amount in local sgd?

1000 ~ 5 = 995 back ... 5$ for points maybe still ok ... as long cash rebate or point rebate is more than 0.5%

When you get the slip to sign, the slip is supposed to show 2 currencies, you're supposed to ticket the currency, AND they're supposed to give you another slip to show the currency that you ticked earlier, then you sign that.

There's always a DCC verbage at the bottom of the slip, remember to read that before you decide to sign or not. If you see it, tell them you don't want DCC and want to be billed in their local currency. The problem with this is that sometimes they person may not understand and sometimes the merchant's bank put a lock on the terminal to force DCC (hence the person can't cancel). So there are genuine cases where it isn't the person's fault, it's more of the bank. This happens frequently in China (I've see it in KL as well).

I use an Amex card to avoid all these issues since DCC only affects Visa and Mastercard. Sure, it's more expensive to use Amex but still cheaper than getting DCCed.

If your bank statement doesn't show the foreign amount next to the transaction, that means it is DCCed.

Thanks for the above explaination, is it common to kena dcced in Italy?

So another safe way to know it's not dcc is if the charge slip shows only euro currency or their local currency right?
