Asian Open: Biden Administration to Waiver COVID-19 IP Rights
May 6, 2021

New High for the Dow, Strong Recovery in Europe
Supporting a COVID-19 IP waiver (intellectual property rights) is something Biden said he would support during his presidential campaign. But, after rising cases in India and mounting pressure from over 100 countries, the US issued a statement to confirm that certain IP’s would be temporarily waivered to help countries fight the pandemic. With investors already pricing in a reopening for much of the Western world, this move could make the recovery more ‘wholesome’ for the global community.

The Dow Jones industrial closed to a record high and commodity currencies (NZD, AUD and CAD) were the strongest majors overnight. Still, tech stocks remained under pressure with Microsoft (MFST) and Amazon (AMZN) dragging the Nasdaq 100 down, which gave back earlier gains to close 0.3% lower.

Jobless claims fall to lowest level since the pandemic

Another strong employment report overnight saw US jobless claims fall below 500k and layoffs fall to their lowest level since the year 2000. The Dow Jones rose 0.5% to set a new-record, the S&P 500 printed a bullish outside day and closed at a five-day high after finding support at the 20-day eMA. Whilst the Nadaq-100 posted a 0.82% gain above its 50-day eMA, it remains very much the laggard of Wall Street after falling -4.82% from its record high.

Net income per share was $0.26
AFFO per share was $0.86
Invested $1.03 billion in properties and properties under development or expansion, including $403.0 million in U.K. properties
Completed the early redemption on all $950.0 million in principal amount of our outstanding 3.250% notes due October 2022
Raised $670 million in net proceeds from a common stock public offering of 12,075,000 shares, inclusive of 1,575,000 shares purchased by the underwriters upon exercise of their option to purchase additional shares

American Water Reports First Quarter 2021 Results
05/03/2021

• First quarter 2021 diluted earnings of $0.73 per share, compared to $0.68 per share in 2020, a 7.4% increase
• 2021 earnings guidance range of $4.18 to $4.28 per share affirmed
• Invested $342 million in the first quarter and added approximately 4,500 customer connections year-to-date through closed acquisitions and organic growth; Capital plan remains on track to invest approximately $1.9 billion in 2021
• Entered into an agreement to acquire the wastewater system of the City of York, Pa., which will add more than 45,000 equivalent customer connections, bringing the total customer connections under agreement to more than 86,000

-- GAAP(1) operating earnings decreased to $473 million, GAAP diluted EPS decreased to $0.40
