https://www.cityindex.com.sg/market-analysis/asian-open-wall-street-breaks-three-day-decline/Asian Open: Wall Street Breaks Three-Day Decline
May 14, 2021

Indices post a mild rebound
Initial jobless claims fell to a 14-month low of 473k, down from 498k last week. Producer prices also rose by 6.2% YoY in April, providing further evidence of inflationary pressures. That said, prices only rose 0.6% MoM.

Wall Street broke a three-day losing streak overnight, yet all major indices produced inside days where trading acidity all took place with the prior day’s range. On that basis alone it is difficult to say whether it is part of a consolidation within the bearish move, or a mild attempt to form a base.

Tesla Stock Falls As Ominous Signs Emerge From China
05/12/2021

Shanghai Plant Expansion Halted
And according to Reuters, Tesla has shelved plans to buy additional land to expand its flagship Shanghai Gigafactory in light of rising U.S.-China tensions and tariff issues. President Biden has not removed the 25% tariffs on imported Chinese electric vehicles imposed under former President Trump.

Tesla's Shanghai factory is designed to make up to 500,000 cars per year. It's currently producing 450,000 Model 3 and Model Y vehicles per year.

Tesla had earlier considered expanding exports of its China-made entry-level Model 3 to more markets, including the U.S., according to Reuters. While Tesla never officially revealed plans to acquire more land near the factory, the 200-acre lot would enable the company to boost capacity by up to 300,000 cars. However, the current site still has space for expansion.

MARRIOTT INTERNATIONAL REPORTS FIRST QUARTER 2021 RESULTS
May 10, 2021

Tony Capuano, Chief Executive Officer, said, “We were pleased to see demand improve meaningfully during the first quarter. We are welcoming more and more guests to our hotels as consumers are traveling again once they feel it is safe. While recovery trajectories vary from region to region, the resiliency of demand has been most keenly demonstrated in mainland China, where occupancy is near the pre-pandemic level. Occupancy reached 66 percent in mainland China in March, nearly the same as in March 2019, on strong demand from both leisure and business travelers.

“In our largest region, the U.S. & Canada, demand increased rapidly as vaccine rollouts accelerated. Occupancy started the year at 33 percent in January and reached 49 percent by March. Leisure demand gained momentum, particularly in ski and beach resort destinations. We are encouraged to see green shoots in special corporate and group bookings, which have been improving as companies slowly begin to return to their offices. The pickup in transient booking pace for the U.S. & Canada points toward continued improvement in consumer sentiment around travel

HE WALT DISNEY COMPANY REPORTS SECOND QUARTER AND SIX MONTHS EARNINGS FOR FISCAL 2021
May 13, 2021

“We’re pleased to see more encouraging signs of recovery across our businesses, and we remain focused on ramping up our operations while also fueling long-term growth for the Company,” said Bob Chapek, Chief Executive Officer, The Walt Disney Company. “This is clearly reflected in the reopening of our theme parks and resorts, increased production at our studios, the continued success of our streaming services, and the expansion of our unrivaled portfolio of multiyear sports rights deals for ESPN and ESPN+.”

Walt Disney (DIS) Q2 2021 Earnings Call Transcript
It's been fantastic to see cast members back at work. Most recently at Disneyland, we were able to quickly recall more than 10,000 furloughed casts and retrain them to be able to operate to the state of California's new health and safety requirements. We continue to see strong, growing demand from consumers as we are at or near our reduced capacity levels at both Walt Disney World and Disneyland for the current quarter. It's clear our guests are excited to get back to experiencing the magic of Disney, and they also have extraordinary confidence in our safety protocols.

At Shanghai Disney Resort, where they just kicked off their year-long fifth-anniversary celebration, the park is operating at or above FY '19 levels. We're also encouraged by what we're seeing at Hong Kong Disneyland, and we are hopeful we will be able to announce a reopening date for Disneyland Paris soon. Despite the pandemic, we continue to make progress on a number of highly anticipated projects at our parks around the world, including the all-new Avengers campus which is set to open at Disney California Adventure on June 4. I had a chance to visit recently, and the attractions and multiple state-of-the-art experiences are truly phenomenal.

S&P 500 Ends Week in Red Despite Signs Tech, Value Can Co-Exist
May 14, 2021

"New CDC guidance saying that vaccinated people no longer need to wear masks, added to more states reopening in May, will lead to more consumer activity during the spring and summer months," Maleyev added.

Consumer spending, which makes up two-thirds of the economy, has been earmarked by some as the key to sustain the broader market rally, particularly in cyclicals corners of the market, as the support from monetary and fiscal stimulus will eventually be reined in.

Week Ahead: Inflation or Stagflation? The UK reopens and the US takes it all off
May 15, 2021

The Fed has indicated that the short-term inflation readings are transitory, meaning that with the US strong re-opening, prices will rise in the short-term, but fall back to “normal” levels in the long-term. However, some Fed officials who have spoken since the CPI release have been backtracking a bit, such as the Fed’s Clarida, who noted he was surprised by the reading (though he still sees inflation as temporary). Also, Fed’s Kaplan, who is more on the hawkish, said that he’s worried about how supply/demand imbalances could feed to higher inflation. Yields initially moved higher on the CPI release, however, have pulled back over the last two days. The same can be said for the US Dollar. The Fed is paying attention to the stronger inflation data.

same. news is transitory. quarter to quarter earnings is transitory. focus on long term investing.

Asian Open: Wall Street Edges Lower, GBP Firmer as UK Reopens
May 18, 2021

Joe Biden is set to release up to 20 million vaccines, (earmarked for domestic use), overseas by the end of June. And the European Union and United States have agreed not to intensify their disputes over aluminium and US steel tariffs, which began under Trump’s watch, and instead focus on formal talks to address excess capacity with a focus on China.

CVS, Target Drop Face-Mask Rules for Fully Vaccinated Customers
May 17, 2021

CVS said customers who aren’t vaccinated “are asked to continue wearing face coverings.” Employees must continue to wear masks. “Health, safety and science will continue to drive our decision-making process,” the company said.

Target said customers and employees who are fully vaccinated against Covid-19 didn’t need face coverings. The company said it would obey local ordinances requiring face coverings, and that it would continue increased safety and cleaning measures, including social distancing, in its stores.

Michael Burry of ‘The Big Short’ reveals a $530 million bet against Tesla
MAY 17 2021

Burry previously mentioned in a tweet, which he later deleted, that Tesla’s reliance on regulatory credits to generate profits is a red flag.

As more automakers produce battery-electric vehicles of their own, ostensibly fewer will need to purchase environmental regulatory credits from Tesla, which they have done in order to become compliant with environmental regulations.

Besides his “Big Short,” Burry made a killing from a long GameStop position recently as the Reddit favorite made Wall Street history with its massive short squeeze.
maybe burry's fans will short with him
or musk's fans will long to counter.
see who will win.
:s22:

Meanwhile, Musk’s electric vehicle venture is facing regulatory scrutiny in China and the U.S. with high-profile vehicle crashes leading to negative publicity and investigations by vehicle safety authorities in both nations.
last time under trump who is more anti china musk making waves.
now under biden less anti china, musk suddenly facing more scrutiny

Biden, Harris Release Tax Returns In Return To Tradition
May 17, 2021

Biden and First Lady Jill Biden, jointly earned $607,336 in 2020. The couple gave a little less than $31,000 — about 5% of their income — to charity. Together, they owed $157,414 in federal income tax.

Their combined income for last year, as Biden was on the campaign trail, was significantly lower than for 2019. The couple reported an adjusted gross income of about $985,000 for that year.

Harris and her husband, Doug Emhoff, appeared to have a more financially successful year, though they too earned less money than in the previous year.

The California couple had an adjusted gross income of $1,695,300 in 2020, according to their tax returns. That is a 45% decrease over their 2019 earnings of $3,095,590.

Harris earned about $346,000 from her work as an author and the couple donated a little more than $27,000 to charity. In all, they owed a total of $621,893 in tax.

looks like biden's proposed wealth tax increase oso will affect himself, his wife and harris' husband.

After a Blowout Quarter, Is AbbVie Stock a Buy?
May 18, 2021

Despite some bad press around Humira's patent status, AbbVie's revenue has continued to grow over the past few years, with an average of 13.1% annualized revenue growth over that time and no signs of slowing down.

Shares are currently priced at about $117, and I believe this stock can still go a lot higher. It was trading at a forward price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 10.4 just a few months back, and that metric is currently has come down to just 9.3, meaning the the price of the stock has gotten cheaper in relation to earnings.
dunno how they calculate P/E 10.4 :s22:

Asian Open: The Fed’s Taper Tease at Odds With Recent Data, USD Catches a Bid
May 20, 2021

So, traders are now looking ahead to their next meeting in June where they’ll also provide revised economic forecast, dot plot and statement. But ultimately the fact that ‘participants agreed’ that economy is still far from the Fed’s goals takes precedence over any such taper tease. And, as widely telegraphed already, the Fed remain unconcerned with rising inflation.

AT&T Mega-Merger With Discovery: How Should Shareholders React?
May 19th, 2021

After the merger with Discovery, there is a high likelihood AT&T will reduce its dividend. Not having its media assets in tow will result in a significant drop in revenue and cash flow. And, since AT&T’s financial resources were already stretched with its elevated debt load, this makes it unlikely that AT&T shareholders will receive the same dividend payout as before on a per-share basis.

Following the close of the transaction, the remaining AT&T business expects low single digit revenue growth, mid-single digit adjusted earnings-per-share growth, $24 billion in annual capital expenditures, a net-debt-to-EBITDA ratio of 2.6x and a resized dividend (to account for the distribution of WarnerMedia) equaling 40% to 43% of $20+ billion in free cash flow.

while AT&T’s dividend reduction will be a negative for shareholders in the short-term, it could pave the way for a return to dividend growth down the road. And, AT&T returning to a focus on telecommunications could help the company better compete with its fierce rivals Verizon Communications (VZ) and T-Mobile US (TMUS), both of which are investing heavily in 5G.

We believe the spin-off could unlock greater value than the current company holds. Therefore, the recent sell-off in AT&T stock after the merger announcement is a potential buying opportunity. With a current share price of ~$29, a fair value estimate of $35 plus the 7% current dividend yield implies a total expected return of more than 13% per year. As a result, AT&T stock remains a buy.
