Wall Street Week Ahead: Investors eye high-dividend stocks as Treasury yields languish
Jul 02, 2021

"Increasingly, the market will focus on companies with the potential for growing payouts and rising current returns," said Bob Leininger, portfolio manager at Gabelli Funds.

Overall, dividend payouts in the S&P 500 will grow by 6% this year and next, well above the 0.8% growth rate implied by current valuations, according to estimates from Goldman Sachs. Of the 57 companies that decreased or suspended their dividends in 2020, 22 have resumed or increased their dividends and another 19 will likely increase their dividends by the end of the year, the firm estimates.

Financial companies will likely lead the way for dividend increases after the Federal Reserve relaxed limitations on payouts and buy-back's, noted Mark Haefele, chief investment officer at UBS Global Wealth Management

Big Tech Threatens to Unfriend Hong Kong
July 6, 2021

The Asia Internet Coalition—an industry group that includes Facebook, Twitter and Google parent Alphabet—has privately warned the Hong Kong government that they might be forced to stop offering services in the city if proposed anti-doxing legislation is implemented. Doxing, putting individuals’ private information online to facilitate harassment by others, was widely used against the police during the antigovernment protests of 2019.

Tech companies worry the new rules could put their own employees at risk of becoming entangled in criminal investigations. According to amendments to Hong Kong’s data-protection laws proposed in May, doxing could result in penalties of up to 1 million Hong Kong dollars, the equivalent of about $128,700, and five years in prison.

playing into winnie's hands. more control and more reach for china tech.

Food Companies Say Combating Climate Change Comes With Costs
June 24, 2021

The global food industry faces increasing pressure from consumers, investors and the government to tackle greenhouse gas emissions, food waste, plastic packaging and water preservation. Two-thirds of consumers are willing to pay more for sustainable brands, such as foods that are marketed as environmentally friendly or come in recycled packaging, according to market-research firm Nielsen IQ.

funny how people "surveyed" are willing to pay for environmentally friendly products, but when it comes to workers wages, "surveys" will say people not willing to pay more for higher wages :s22:

Israel Says Covid-19 Vaccine Less Effective at Preventing Delta Variant Infections, but Data Is Mixed
July 6, 2021

The news comes amid a resurgence in Covid-19 cases in Israel after new cases had dropped to just a handful a day in June. The rise is being fueled by the Delta variant, which is rolling back progress made against the virus in nations around the world. The Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported Tuesday that the country had identified 501 new cases on Monday, the highest number since late March, and that 42% of those cases were in people who had been vaccinated against Covid-19.

In its brief statement on Monday, the Israeli Ministry of Health said that vaccines have been just 64% effective at preventing infection and symptomatic disease in Israel since June 6, though they remain 93% effective at preventing hospitalization and severe disease.

Earnings season
Expectations are high. Bloomberg forecast 65% growth in EPS in SP500 companies. Tech are are expected to lag other sectors with a 31% increase in earnings.

However, it’s worth keeping in mind that tech stocks will mainly be up against tougher comparisons from last year than in the previous quarter as these are the stocks which shone across the pandemic amid the WFH dynamic and accelerated digitalization.

19 dividend stocks to help you combat inflation
July 15, 2021

What do you want from a dividend stock? The most obvious answer is “income,” but what may be more important is that the dividend increases over time. That’s how you stay ahead of inflation. Even when official inflation figures are low, your personal inflation can be considerable, depending on your circumstances. Or you may need investment income to replace part of your working income when you retire.
