Shiny, there is some high level trolling going in the thread :)

Mate, come on, that's rubbish and you know it. I go to Berkeley once or twice a month; my local game store is over there on University Avenue (it's called Eudemonia; if you're a Magic the Gathering player, make sure you swing by!).

Clearly you know a lot about Berkeley, so how about I meet you at Sliver for a pizza this weekend?

Haha. No thanks. I was robbed by a homeless at peoples park. Fortunately I now live in a world class safe haven called sinkieland.

Yea... I second that. Since you are looking at hostel environment, might as well go for a condo. Plus you can hv a washer n dryer to urself! That means, you don need to bring so many clothes! Keep more luggage space for your loots.

any recommendation on where to stay in san francisco? the cheapest i see around is at least $200 after tax for a private single/double/twin room with shared bathroom in hostel environment.

Passed by the Orange Hostel in San Francisco yesterday, by bus. In a pretty good location. I recall reading pretty ok reviews on it.

Will be heading to New York and Washington DC during Chinese New Year period next year due to promotion ticket on Qatar Airways.

It will be my first time in New York, any recommended places to go in New York or avoid during this period?

Chinatown.

There's nothing much in DC except for the National Mall. Pretty dead at night.

I have to disagree on the DC bit: the week I spent in DC a few years back was amazing. It'll still be cold since this is February we're talking about, but off the top of my head:

  • The National Air and Space Museum - you can see a Saturn 5 rocket booster!
  • The Library of Congress - absolutely worth the walking tour;
  • The Newseum, which I haven't been to, but I hear is amazing;
  • If you're an art nerd, there are galleries galore; the Renwick, just across the street from the White House, is drastically underrated;
  • Adams Morgan and Dupont Circle are where the nightlife is, and both are really nice places to stay.

I feel that the museums are more catered for children, not for adults. I went to the National Air and Space Museum. I didn't particularly find it interesting. Probably it's just me. The good plus is that entries are free to the attractions. A night drive seeing the monuments lit up is nice. I spent 2 weeks in Arlington/DC.

See it's hard to suggest, different ppl enjoy different things. My parents will find it boring too just like Chinatown.

What's interesting to you maybe a hack boring to others.
To some they enjoy a amazing race others like chill by the pool at a resort and not experience the city

To each its own. You can drop me off at National Air and Space Museum and pick me up next month - I will still find a place I have not seen/visited yet (hint - when I was a student, my first field of study was aerospace and I was working as intern at Soviet Buran program). Other museums are great too.

But people are different - some want to go to museums, some - want to get wasted at bars and some - spent several thousand $ on malls and watches. It is all OK.

Nua at home, did 2 bike rides from Arlington to DC, hang out around Arlington, Arlington Cemetery, help friend view apartments, run errands for friend, etc. Was preparing for the bike ride too. And two days after the bike ride (when I went back), basically do laundry and rest. Maybe it was a week plus, not two weeks... Can't really remember. My friend wanted to give me a tour at the state department and I didn't have time for it / too lazy.

Maybe cos I've seen/read the stuff at the museum before, those aircrafts, spacecraft, one section on Amelia Earhart, the Jupiter moons, etc. The only thing that was interesting for me is the moon rock which took less than a few mins.

Planning a trip to NY, in abit of dilemma for flight tics. Should I go for Qatar SIN-DOH-JFK vice versa at <$1600 or Cathay outbound is SIN-HKG-JFK, coming back is JFK-YVR-HKG-JFK at <$1400

Cathay price is quite attractive but unsure about the YVR and aircraft.. read that Qatar A350 is nice. :)

The difference will be around $150<$200 and I will lose 1 day in order to get the more attractive pricing for Qatar flight. If I take Cathay I will arrive NY (Sat night) on same day I depart Singapore (Sat afternoon). For Qatar I will depart Singapore on Sun evening and reach NY Mon morning.

Time is quite precious cos I won't change my arrival date to SIN..

The YVR is a stopover for 1hr, not sure if need to deplane. Read that probably need to apply for Canadian ETA too.
