I'm going to be a little less pessimistic. Google Maps says that right now (9:15am on a Tuesday morning), it's a shade under 4 hours from downtown LA to the Bellagio in Las Vegas. In the morning you're going to be going in the opposite direction to most of the commuters, so I don't know, this feels like it might be right.

If you leave LA any time after midday though - yeah, then you're going to be caught in the outbound commuter flow and you're not going to have a good time. If you're going to do Los Angeles to Las Vegas, leave early in the morning - or, even better, stay in Anaheim or Palm Springs the night before.

All of these are non-stop driving times, of course, so make sure you add an hour or two for stopovers.

I’ll be arriving around 9+am on new yr eve. Gonna drive frm Beverly Hills to Vegas. I’ve not much choice but to brave the traffic.

USA west coast Road trip

Dear experts,



My wife and I are planning a road trip to the USA this Nov/Dec
Travel dates are as follows : 28Nov 2017 to 23 Dec 2017
She is meeting her aunt who is a local in Spokane. She will host us for a couple of days to get over the jetlag and join us in vegas(she flys to LV, we drive from Spokane to LV)
Budget is around USD150/night for accommodation. We are fine with motels/AirBnB

Flight details :
Touch down LAX@1450(28Nov) => domestic flight to Spokane@2000(28Nov)

Depart LAX@2350(23Dec) => SIN


Would like to seek your opinion/pro tips on this road trip. Any feedback is welcomed.

Depending on the actual winter conditions, the roads to the mountains and canyons may be covered with ice and not snow as it is early winter.

Seattle to SF is at least 12 hours straight without break, not recommended. Either fly or train.

Please cater the driving time in your itinerary, seemed to packed between places.

Heading up to Seattle this Monday
Driving from Seattle to San Francisco, take the coastal route great views but is a long 12 hr drive easy from Portland to SFO. Done it myself but in summer. You may take longer consideration weather

Oh mate be careful with this bit. Yosemite to Las Vegas in the winter, when Tioga pass is closed, is an all-day drive. Block out a day for it.

This bit is super hairy too. You’re talking about the depths of winter; there’s a very good chance that these roads (especially Bryce to Moab) will be straight-up closed.

As much as I love the trip you’re talking about, I think you might need to toss Bryce and Moab. A better bet would be to spend a whole day in Zion (dress warmly!), then the next day, drive to Page. I’ve hit snow on that drive (between Page and Zion) in October; take it slow and stop if it really starts to chuck it down.

That’s a long drive for one day - about seven or eight hours nonstop.

My wife and I will be travelling to NYC during end Jan '18.
Does anybody have any idea how long it takes to drive from Washington DC (eg. Union Station) to Woodbury Common Premium outlet and then to Boston?

Also, the driving time from Boston to Brooklyn?

Jan is winter, beware of snowstorms and whiteout.

So all of the drives you’re asking about are going to be highly unpredictable, for multiple reasons. I’ll start with the base times, and then we can talk about it a bit more.

DC to the Woodbury Common outlets is about five hours; Woodbury Common to Boston is about four hours; Boston to Brooklyn depends a lot on which part of Brooklyn, but four-and-a-half hours is a minimum.

There are two huge problems though: traffic and weather.

As someone pointed out upthread, weather at that time of year is wildly unpredictable; it might be mild and clear, or you might be driving through a foot-an-hour snowstorm and have to slow down to 15 or 20mph... or even be stopped entirely because of a jackknifed truck.

And traffic in that corridor can be horrendous depending on the time of day. You’re talking about driving north out of Washington, in and out of NYC, and in and out of Boston; if you do that at the same time as the rush-hour commute, it’s going to be nightmarishly slow, especially around NYC.

Are you sure you want to drive instead of flying?

Most likely we will drive from Washington to Woodbury to do some shopping before driving to Boston.

For the Boston to Brooklyn part still uncertain on that. We were thinking since we have more baggage after shopping in Woodbury, it’ll be more convenient for us to drive to Brooklyn instead of flying.

How is your itinerary like? Try not to drive during winter as traffic and weather is unpredictable. Suggest you go travel by domestic or amtrak (train). If luggage is a concern, use the red cap service at the train station.

I tend to do shopping at my last stop; don't want to lug all the goods around.

It seemed like you have pretty made up your decision with driving......
I won’t risk such driving in that part of US during winter.

Bro, I’m very curious. What vehicle are you renting? Driving from the east to the west, wouldn’t you need to change wheels?
