is taking Amtrak okay to explore states to states?

Cause both of us are have failing eyesight and concentration and likely to be a menace on the road.

Amtrak is known for delays, so buffer for that. Other than that, the train ride is pretty awesome. I took the California Zephyr.

How’s the coverage in US on Starhub prepaid?

Pretty good. I used it in NYC, Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Washington DC, Maryland, Virginia, San Francisco, Oakland, Boston, Maine and on the Amtrak from Chicago to Emeryville. There will be parts where there's no coverage where it’s ulu.

also do I need a car seat for child ages 6 yrs old in Los Angeles will be driving to San Diego etc ? Is it acceptable to bring those combi booster seat ? Or must be those full height child seat for 6 years to 7 years? Tks

yes, need car seat. if your child is tall enough to use a booster, then any booster is ok, we used the combi booster seat also on earlier trips. Most recently, I used the mifold coz we were using Uber in LA but if you are renting, you can get from the rental coy.

They have state, county and city tax. So it depends on the place. I believe it also depends on the purchase items.

Eg: Google says this for Las Vegas, LA and New York City.

http://www.salestaxstates.com/sales-tax-calculator-nevada-las_vegas

http://www.salestaxstates.com/sales-tax-calculator-california-los_angeles

http://www.salestaxstates.com/sales-tax-calculator-new_york-new_york_city

You can see tax rates caries from different zip codes.

What kinda advice do u need?
No GST refund anyway in these places
Los Angeles is a city in California. New York here is New York State or New York City?

Big countries like Canada not “fix”, countries how run provinces or state like states will not have a fix rate for the entire country.

I am heading to New York in Mar, and will be staying in the city for 3 nights. Any recommended hotels for a family of 2 adults and 1 teenage? Budget would be less than S$300 all in (breakfast can be excluded).

Or should I go for AirBnB?

Thanks.

$300 per night, or $300 for three nights?

If the former, then you should be able to find something on Tripadvisor.

If the latter, then god help you, you're gonna struggle to find anything much under $70 USD a night.

Google Maps is great for this sort of thing. Not only does it have petrol stations (just search for "gas station"), it even shows you what their up-to-date prices are so you won't get stuck paying too much.

That said, you won't have any trouble finding places to fuel up unless you're headed waaaayyyy out into the back-country (e.g. Death Valley or Joshua Tree).

Hi All,

I will be going over to the Skillman/Princeton, New Jersey area in early March for a period of approximately 8-10 weeks on business and it will be my first time visiting US.

Are there areas where it would be preferred to stay in? What can I expect in terms of the culture/weather there in March and what can I do there during the weekends?

Based on the information I have received thus far I should have the option of renting a car (note: I've never driven on the 'other-side of the road' before) - would this be preferred VS Uber?

My HR is formalizing the details of my trip so I have yet to get any specifics yet on what my stay arrangements will be but I hope to get some ideas first from all of you. Appreciate your time!

So, firstly, that's a lot for three weeks. I'd leave four weeks for that itinerary - something like:

  • 4-5 days in SF
  • a couple of days in LA (or ditch it entirely if you're doing Orlando, honestly LA is not that great)
  • 2-5 days in Vegas (2-3 if you're just doing Vegas, 4-5 if you're using it as a base for Zion and the Grand Canyon)
  • 3-4 days in Orlando,
  • 3-5 days in DC (I love it because I'm a giant civics nerd)
  • 3-5 days in NYC (and just do a day trip to Niagara).

Secondly, no, Amtrak sucks (ask the people who've been stuck on an Amtrak somewhere in Oregon since Sunday) and it's full of old people. Either fly or drive between SF-LA-LV; fly to Orlando; fly to Washington; then you can take the Amtrak Acela (which is the one Amtrak route that doesn't suck) to NYC.

Thirdly, my tip would be to do this in late summer/early autumn. The mountains will still be open, but all the kids will be back in school so Orlando won't be too crowded.

Hey thx for the tips! Will work on it.

Im actually only planning

2days san franc to see golden bridge and fisherman wharf
2days-3days LA to see hollywood and universal stuido
2days Vegas to just experience the atmosphere and find gordon ramsay restaurant
4-5days in orlando for theme parks
2days in washington to see white house and abraham lincoln
1week in new york (including 1 day tour to niagara falls)

So I think you should shuffle that a bit:
1) Less time in Orlando, more time in San Francisco. Look, Orlando's pretty great, but 3-4 days in Disneyland is going to be plenty. You'll get a lot more out of San Francisco—museums! Hiking! Golden Gate! Also you'll want time in SF to chill out and get over the jetlag.

2) Skip Vegas. I do love Vegas but it's basically Orlando but for grownups. On that note you're doing a lot of theme parks; are you travelling with kids?

3) Less time in NYC, more time in Washington. A week in NYC is a surprisingly long time, and you might struggle to fill it, but there's plenty to do in Washington.

4) In Los Angeles: make sure you do the Warner Bros studio tour. It's right near Universal, so you can do Warner in the morning and Universal Studios in the afternoon. And Hollywood kind of sucks; West Hollywood is the fun part of town. Stay there instead.

If you've only got two days in each place, you're only going to have one day of actual sightseeing time once you factor in travel time.
