An approved Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) allows citizens from Visa Waiver Program (VWP) countries to transit or travel to the U.S. for a maximum of 90 days stay per visit for tourism or business. Unless revoked, travel authorizations are valid for multiple visits over a period of two years from the date of authorization, or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.

ESTA applications may be submitted at any time prior to travel, though it is recommended that travelers apply as soon as you begin preparing travel plans or prior to purchasing airline tickets. General determination for a decision on a pending ESTA is usually available within 72 hours. However, some cases may take longer to review depending on circumstances.

Eligible VWP travelers are strongly encouraged to file their applications through the Official ESTA website at https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov or the ESTA mobile app to avoid phishing scams and excess fees charged by third party websites. Download the free ESTA mobile app from the App Store (Apple) or the Google Play Store (Android).

Effective on January 1, 2026, the fee for an approved ESTA is $40.27 USD.

If your ESTA is denied, you are only charged $10.27 for the processing of your application. The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is not responsible for any third-party fees for the transaction.

ESTA question?

If you have questions or need some information about ESTA:

  • Visit the ESTA website – https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/faq?lang=en
  • Visit the CBP Information Center website for information or Ask a Question – https://help.cbp.gov/
  • Contact CBP Travel Communications Center’s ESTA Support, Call: +1 (202) 325-8000, 24 Hours a Day 7 Days a week (24/7) except U.S. Federal Holidays
Email your inquiry to: SingaporeCBPInquiry@state.gov and a response will generally be provided within 3 working days, except U.S. and Singapore Holidays

I going to spend 10 hours in new york

any recommendations?
Uh, you're going to be squeezed for time. It takes 1-2 hours just to get into Manhattan from any of the airports, and I assume you're going to be schlepping baggage. I wouldn't try to do this, you'll end up exhausted.

Though If you're flying through JFK, the answer's easy: get a room for the day at the TWA Hotel! You can clean up from the flight; have breakfast and lunch at the superb hotel restaurants; get a drink in the cocktail bar (a converted aircraft parked on the tarmac out back!), and enjoy the absolutely immaculate restoration of Eero Saarinen's architectural triumph.

i had a weekend to kill while waiting for my flight home in JFK, please recommend what are the place i should go in new york ? i properly will stay around time square
...can I recommend not Times Square? It's insanely crowded and you're going to have to fight the crowds every time you want to go anywhere. Staying up closer to Central Park, or lower down toward Chelsea, is a much better bet.

Everyone's going to give you all the usual recommendations, but I'm going to give you something a little off the beaten track: walk down the High Line park (a converted elevated railroad with amazing city views) and visit Little Island, a genuinely amazing park that's been built over the Hudson River. On a sunny summer day there's literally no better place to spend time (and it's got views of Lady Liberty too).

26-29 Sept, $200-$250 USD
There are absolutely no good options in that price range in Manhattan. Everything I can see on every booking aggregator looks like you'll come out of it missing a kidney. But I have one option for you - the Towneplace Suites in Long Island City.

It's maybe a little above your range ($300 USD/nt all-in including fees), and technically it's in Queens instead of Manhattan, but it's well reviewed, it'll be perfectly fine, and most importantly it's six minutes' walk from the 21st St / Queensbridge MTA station, from where you can catch a train to Times Square in less than ten minutes. (Also, if you book a refundable rate, you can cancel it later if prices in Manhattan drop to within your range.)

Nothing about this CPB thing was asked of me when I landed in SFO on 10 June

I walked straight to customs, got my fingerprints taken & off I went to collect my bags
