Scan with app in OCBC also don't work. Tried two different outlets one like a good bar another roadside coffee joint. All have QR in front to pay.

I'm in Chiang mai not BKK

Ok just to update it works at Big C so it seems just having QR at the cashier not enough. Need to try different outlets

Added later: Confirm works in few places. Tried 3 already. So yd was bad luck.

It is not worthwhile at all to use promptpay due to the bad exchange rate (i think there is a minmum amount also) and it does not work for most of the night market vendors but there are very limited options as a tourist. If you go TH often enough, it is worthwhile to pay some money to open a Bangkok bank account after which you can scan and pay like a local using the app.

i tried this on my recent trip, the Kasikorn E-wallet and it works just like the bangkok bank app, downside is only the Suvarbhumi airport branch can open this card and top up the wallet and the only way to put money inside is by using foreign currency. Can read about it from the link.

thanks for sharing
just curious, if you top up to the wallet and in the event need to withdraw or close account, is user allowed to withdraw the balance in the wallet?

yes, you can draw from any Kasikorn ATM machine using the card. however, i recommend putting in just enough for use.

Yes, contemplating to pay an agent to open a Thai bank account.
Tried visiting quite a number of banks in various place and no luck in opening a Thai bank account.
Its still not fully interoperable to use SG banks for payment in Thailand..

So its a e-wallet and not an actual bank account with a card/passbook?

only certain location can do this, can pm me if you need info. No need to walk in any bank to ask as it will not work unless you have documents such as residency or visa

yes correct, you get a debit card also however this not recommended as the top up only at suvarbhumi airport and you have to use foreign currency to top up and the exchange rate is worse than promptpay

Can only use on Thai QR not QR with shop name. Many BKK street vendors already accepting Thai QR.

Do this as in opening a Thai bank account or this KBank that you are referring to?
Tried but can't seem to PM you, restricted profile.

hmmmm... then it kind of defeats the purpose though since the rate is worst which means not being able to utilise it for payment like a "local".

see your pm.

pay cash is better if you don't want to lose the exchange rate of course. I am sharing this as it is new and at least a tourist can open an app that can scan local QR code, which is something not possible until now. I am trying myself more for experience as i already have my bangkok bank app and account to use.

Just came back from Krabi. PayLah just won’t scan Promptpay QR when vendor is not business registered. Pretty annoying actually but i guess it’s for safety purposes. Stick to cash!

actually happy with this arrangement so we can only use prompt pay on registered business. acceptance level is much higher in bangkok, able to prompt pay even to street vendor in on nut
