Powell signals rate cut maybe needed as job market weakens “The shifting balance of risks may warrant adjusting our policy stance,” But inflation risk is not gone “The effects of tariffs on consumer prices are now clearly visible. We expect those effects to accumulate over coming months, with high uncertainty about timing and amounts,” In essence, Powell confirms we are facing weak economy and inflation = stagflation is comin

Looks like Eldridge Colby, the arch Realist who literally wrote the book on containing China, and whom I believe wrote this, has made his assessment of US capabilities and the geostrategic balance of power, and decided that the US cannot realistically hold the line in the Western Pacific to contain China. Instead, it must focus on controlling the Western Hemisphere in a neo-Monroe Doctrine. (Caveat: I have not read the report.) If this is accurate, then it is difficult to overstate just how far behind the curve the mainstream commentariat—and the Yookay foreign policy establishment—is. They are still arguing about how the US could best split its resources to take on Russia in Ukraine and Iran in the Middle East AS WELL AS containing China in the Western Pacific. Meanwhile, the man responsible for writing US National Defence Strategy, who spent the last four years arguing that Washington had to prioritise China over supporting Ukraine and Israel, now appears to be relegating even China to second place behind securing the Americas.

NEW: The new National Defense Strategy has been delivered to SecDef Hegseth for review, and places homeland security over deterring China has the Pentagon’s primary mission. Not everyone in the Pentagon thinks that’s a good idea.

After a slight dip in outbound investment in China’s Belt and Road Initiative in 2020-2022, leading Washington think tanks declared that the program had been a failure. But the program had merely shifted, to different regions, and to investments higher up the value chain. In the first half of 2025, Chinese BRI investments are again at record levels, and are diversified across manufacturing, high technology, energy, mining, and transportation. Cumulatively, China has invested over $1.3 trillion into developing economies in the past twelve years. Those investments have profound impacts for global trade and diplomacy, and conferred on China deep and enduring advantages.

Reposted from Ignacio Ramirez Moreno, CFA on LinkedIn: “China just borrowed at the same rate as the US Treasury. Let that marinate for a second. For the first time in history, Beijing's dollar bonds priced exactly where Washington's do. Not 50 basis points higher. Not 20. Zero. Think about that. The country that owns $3.3 trillion in US reserves just proved it doesn't need to pay a premium to borrow dollars anymore. China's Ministry of Finance dropped $4bn in Hong Kong: ↳ 3-year bonds: 3.625% (exactly matching US Treasuries) ↳ 5-year bonds: 0.02% above Treasuries (basically a rounding error) ↳ 30x oversubscribed (central banks couldn't get enough) Here's what's actually happening: We're watching the birth of a new risk-free asset. Or are we? Because when Abu Dhabi borrows at 0.18% over Treasuries, and South Korea at 0.17%, and now China at zero... Either the world has decided sovereign risk doesn't exist anymore. Or we're pricing in something markets haven't fully grasped yet. The old playbook said US Treasuries were the only true risk-free asset. The bedrock. The foundation. The thing everything else gets priced against. But what happens when other sovereigns achieve parity? What happens when central banks start viewing Chinese dollar bonds as interchangeable with Treasuries? ↳ Portfolio theory gets rewritten ↳ Reserve currency dynamics shift ↳ The "risk-free rate" becomes plural, not singular Markets are "flush with liquidity," the bankers say. Translation: There's so much money sloshing around that yield differentials have compressed to nothing. But here's the uncomfortable question: If China can borrow dollars as cheaply as America, what exactly makes Treasuries special anymore? Is it still about creditworthiness? Or have we entered an era where geopolitics trumps financial metrics? Because let's be honest: When half the buyers are central banks and sovereign wealth funds, this isn't just about yield. It's about optionality. Diversification. Hedging against a world where the dollar's dominance isn't guaranteed. So here's my question: Are we witnessing the emergence of a true alternative to US Treasuries? Or is this just peak liquidity making everything look risk-free before reality reasserts itself? What's your take?”

For the first time since the mid-1990s, foreign central banks have held more gold than US treasuries. Gold has just pulled off something historic — for the first time in nearly 30 years, global central banks now hold more gold than US Treasuries. Beyond a market event, the quiet rotation from paper to metal marks a potential turning point in the architecture of global finance.

MONEY SUPPLY JUST BROKE THE SOUND BARRIER: 121% OF GDP AND RISING The United States now holds more money than it produces. Broad money supply sits at 121% of GDP. For the first time in modern history, the stock of dollars exceeds the annual flow of everything America makes, builds, and sells. This is not an accounting error. This is monetary physics breaking down in real time. The mechanism is brutally simple. Banks create deposits when they lend. Those deposits become money supply. When people hoard cash in savings accounts, money market funds, and Treasury bills instead of spending it, velocity collapses below 1.0. The money exists but it does not circulate. It accumulates in the top decile while Main Street wages stagnate. Interest rates turbocharge the problem. When the Fed pays 5% on reserves and T-bills yield similar rates, wealthy holders get paid to NOT spend. Asset prices explode. Housing becomes unaffordable. Equities hit record highs. Grocery bills compound. The velocity gap turns into a class weapon. Here is what the data reveals. M2 money supply stands at $21 trillion against $17.7 trillion in GDP. Money market funds hold $6.4 trillion, earning risk free yield while doing nothing for the real economy. Bank reserves sit at $3.5 trillion. The money is frozen in financial plumbing while families cannot afford rent. Velocity has collapsed from 2.2 in 2000 to 1.2 today. Every dollar cycles through the economy half as many times. The system is clogged with liquidity that refuses to flow. The danger is not what you think. Hyperinflation does not come from high money supply with low velocity. It comes when velocity suddenly reverses. When credit accelerates. When fiscal stimulus hits. When China’s credit impulse turns positive. When rate cuts unlock hoarded trillions. That is when supply chains cannot match demand. That is when price controls fail. That is when currencies collapse. The playbook for survival is clear. Own productive assets that generate cash flow. Avoid debt with negative carry. Track velocity metrics religiously: M2 divided by GDP, bank credit growth rates, money market fund assets, Treasury bill share of federal debt, and China’s credit impulse index. When velocity inflects upward while supply remains constrained, consumer price inflation will catch up with asset inflation within quarters, not years. This is not conspiracy. This is plumbing. The money supply exceeding GDP is not fake prosperity or magic. It is balance sheet mathematics combined with incentive structures that reward hoarding over circulation. The Federal Reserve, Treasury, and banking system created this regime through quantitative easing, interest on reserves, and collateral rules that privilege financial assets. The consequences are measurable. Wealth inequality at Gilded Age levels. Housing affordability at historic lows. Real wages stagnant for decades while stock portfolios double. The system works exactly as designed. The question is for whom.

"Central banks have been buying up huge quantities of bullion in recent years.... Yet fewer and fewer of these purchases are being reported to the IMF, which collects data voluntarily. In the most recent quarter, only about one-third of official buying was publicly reported, down from around 90 per cent four years ago, according to WGC estimates based on Metals Focus data."

You might have heard Wall Street boffins talking about the "Sell America trade." Lemme explain what it is, what's driving it, and why it matters.
