timo.vn

need passport, vn mobile number.

there are a few steps that you need to take care:

1. sign up not more than one day before your departure. if you sign up too early, they will call you on your vn number to arrange kyc appointment. you dont want to pickup the call or you will incur international roaming charges.

2. upon your arrival in sg or hn, you can call their toll free number from your local mobile. because of caller id, they will know who you are immediately. you can make appointment for the same day about one hour or more ahead of time. they need time to print your atm card and prepare paperwork so dont show up without an appointment. once kyc is completed, you can pickup your atm card and pin number slip.

Hmmm why do we need a bank account in VN?

Hmmm why do we need a bank account in VN?

travel from north to south without carrying too much cash?

purchase train tickets online and directly from vietnam railways?

keep surplus dongs in time deposit with 7% interest rate until the next trip :)

everyone has his/her own needs.

also, timo is a leading fintech in apac. trying their digital banking for the fun of it.

p.s. the bank staffs are all young and very beautiful!

does it works with prepaid?
or can you recommend any cheap n good vn mobile plan? :)
TQ!

yes, vietnam prepaid number.

any of the big 3 should be good. i'm using vinaphone prepaid with validity automatically extended 60 days with every use or topup. when roaming is enabled, you call their customer service from singapore for free if you are on starhub's network. just found out calling the cs will also extend the validity. so, with regular use, your vietnamese number is valid for life.

apart from the official data plans published on their website, they also from time to time offer promotional data plan. dial *091# to find out which promotion you are eligible for the current month. right now, i'm using the daily plan VD2 which gives me 500mb data for use until 23:59 for a mere 2000 dong. for a week stay, my data access will cost just 14k dong or less than sing$1.

That's useful. I'm using Vinaphone and upon reaching 2 months expiry, i do a 20k top up via the app. I realised that, if you switch on the roaming, you cannot use data. Not a big problem, until you arrived in vietnam and confused that you cant get connected. Because you will need to switch off the roaming first before the data resumed.

yes, mobile data and international roaming are mutually exclusive. you need to toggle roaming by sending IR ON/OFF to 9123 and mobile data by sending 3G ON/OFF to 888. i was initially confused too but now i find it is a good thing as it prevents you from losing all your money due to accidental data roaming. thumbs up to vietnam!

if you forget to activate roaming while in Vietnam, you can do that via Vinaphone website while overseas

yup, if you have the password and you need to have at least 100k dong in the main balance. but they don't seem to enforce the 100k requirement anymore if you activate via sms while in vietnam.

Any idea when will they have 4g for Vinaphone?

already got it. sim exchange is free for now but the lady insisted i pay 25k. I didn't want to argue...

try your luck and see if you can get it for free.

for vina, 4g coverage is currently available at hanoi, dalat, saigon and the mekong delta.

after swapping, the new sim card took effect immediately. very fast compared to indonesia which took around 5-6 hours and overnight for taiwan.

hanoi's general post office. dont go there ya or they will make you pay 25k.

look for vina shop in a less central place with a poster of the 4g sim card hanging outside or by the door and the wordings "doi sim" and "mien phi".

doi means exchange. mien phi means free.

new trains serving saigon-nha trang. the sleeper bunks look really good!

the timing a bit ... early morning 5.30am reach Nha Trang cannot check in hotel =:p ... still got 30mins before sunrise.

"Regarding the specific itinerary, ship SNT2 Saigon - Nha Trang departure in Saigon at 20 hours 30 minutes, to Nha Trang at 05 hours 30 minutes; pickup at the Saigon Railway Station, Di An, Bien Hoa, Cham Towers, Nha Trang.

SNT1 ship Nha Trang - Saigon restaurant in Nha Trang start at 19 hours 10 minutes, to Saigon at 03 hours 28 minutes; pickup at the Nha Trang railway station, Thap Cham, Bien Hoa, Di An, Saigon."

yes, i agree. it would be great if they push back the timings by 2-3 hours. the traffic jam
can be crazy when getting to the railway station during the evening rush hours. it would also allow us to fly there after work and then board the train during the same night.
