I was in Hanoi yesterday but there was nothing about the protest. I was mostly in the Old Quarters though.

Stay hotel better, not expensive also.
3* hotel normally 30+ to 50+ ...
the better ones perhaps 50+ per nite with bath tub and breakfast ...

You might want to stay near ben thanh market, many 3* hotel at that area.
if u wanna stay near vincom mall, parkson, nearby are more 4/5* hotel ...

if u wanna experience their culture and lifestyle, and live like them.
can try staying at their airbnb ...

for 5* hotel, usually is about 120 to 180+ sgd per nite for two ...
