There is a youtube video of a couple who did this but from HCM to Hanoi.

https://youtu.be/1wJsWuJZFwQ

You can rent one way and send the bike back on the train. There is some uncertainty about validity of licences and insurance, and you just take the risk. They don’t check licence.

We rented motorbikes in Da Nang and it was easy to ride, steep hills no problem, automatic 125 cc bike. Certainly an adventure but a long ride.

Saigon and Hainoi city biking would be chaotic but once you get used to it you just go with the flow.

in vietnam, they don't recognize international driving permit. so, no license is valid unless you have a vietnamese one.

You can actually just buy a tourist data card when you clear the customs

how much would this cost?
Depends on what you want...
If you want data more than talk time, then go Vinaphone

The starter pack is sold for 300,000 VND ($17 SGD) and comes with 8 GB data (in up to 4G/LTE), 80 dom. minutes, 80 SMS and 50 internatl. minutes

If you wan something basic or balanced, then go for Viettel.

Vinaphone and Viettel are two biggest telco in vietnam. Both of them dominate around 75% in vn

Personally i am using Viettel because I make more calls

For grab promo... Check with your own credit cards
In Vietnam, they will have promos for their own credit cards. For the past one year, grab Vietnam has been very aggressive to promote GRABPAY by MOCA
