Hoan Kiem to Văn La-Quang Trung-Hà?
your address is incomplete.

Do you mean Van la, Quang Trung, Hà Đông?

If my guess is correct. That area is very far south... It's very residential iirc

One way via grabcar should be around 200 to 300K

Travelling time can take anywhere from 40mins to 1hr, depending on the traffic conditions.

Be prepared to know your way to the exact location

I have made bookings to an apartment in Ho Chi Minh for 3 separate nights as I will be joining tours out of Ho Chi Minh. Bookings are made by booking.com and no credit card are required for reservation. Also free cancellation is allowed before certain dates.

The apartment whatsapp me asking for $100usd per booking as prepayment citing it as their policy. My accommodation cost is less than $100usd per night. The apartment mentioned that they will refund me the excess upon checking in.

Has anyone encounter such practice before?

Thanks in advance for all comments and suggestions.

Hello everyone,

If you have been or know Hanoi quite well, what would you recommend to see for group of three adults?

All of us have been in Vietnam number of times, but not in Hanoi. We will be there for four days/nights and have hotel around Old Quarter area.

I'm going to hanoi in 2 weeks. Been to hcm countless times, but first time to hanoi. Any recommendations? Intend to travel out of city to the way up. Any suggestions for cheap hotels or guest houses in hanoi? Want cheap and clean.

How many days are you going for holiday?

Is there any type of places you don't wanna visit?

What's your hotel budget per night?
Travelling alone or with family or with wife?

It's normal. It's a form of security deposit.

Your cost per night may be less than the deposit amount... But... Many items in the apartment will cost far more to replace if you spoil it during your stay.

I ever had a colleague who ***** broke the window handle... He paid 120USD to the hotel

Going for 6 days. Prefer to visit country side see scenery rather than museums. Hotel not more than 400k if possible. Travelling with a female Viet friend.

That price is on low end... you might end up with hostels only. If you increase price per night to $40, you'd have good selection, see below. Please note, that prices quoted at Agoda and other places usually do not include taxes/fees which add 5-20% more at the end.

My approach for selecting hotel is following:

- Open google maps. Select area, set threshold for price, like no more than $50, then set review score. I always set it 4 points or more.
- In the resulted list, go to reviews and read latest reviews for last several month. Search reviews for keywords 'noise', 'dirt', 'problem', 'communication', 'helpful' - whatever is important for you.
- Do the same review search via keywords at Agoda.

Above approach usually narrows down 3-4 properties. Then I look at photos taken by travelers and decide which one.

I almost always book via Agoda and pay in advance during booking. Do not use Pay Later because it has 5% hidden fees inside.

So no one has Vietnam SIM card which is active but you don't need?

BTW, is there an option to have Vietnam SIM card to keep it active with minimum fee, like Starhub does 90 days validity extension for $1.5?

Since you are travelling with a local Viet female friend.... And you prefer to see the countryside and nature scenery

Here are my suggestions:

1) accommodation
Best to ask her, a local, to do the booking. Usually it will be decent homestays but affordable ones.
Plus, she speak Viet and the northern accent. She knows how to handle the locals. Let the local handle the locals

2) places of interest
In terms of itinerary, seek her recommendation and advice as well...

I won't be surprised if she bring you to places which only locals will know...

3) Transportation
Since you prefer to see the countryside and nature scenery... if you can ride a motorbike, you should strongly consider rent a motorbike , it's far more convenient to go around Vietnam if you have your own transport

It's very difficult to get grab/goviet/taxi in Ulu place and more often then not, you will end up getting chopped, cuz demand outweight supply

even though Henabi bro say it's normal, but for me i would still think it's a bit sketchy. Been to Hanoi and booked via Airbnb before so didn't face such issue.

why not just buy vietnam sim card each time? the price is pretty cheap mah. some things no need to save.

anyway, if i am not wrong, there is a data plan under viettel that gives u data at a flat fee for 1 year. so that keeps your plan active for 1 year i guess.

found it:
https://vietteltelecom.vn/di-dong/chi-tiet-goi-cuoc/280

u gotta top up and use sms send message "D500" to the number 191.

ya doesn't matter one... ultimately the vietnamese can figure out things way better even if is south person in north or vice versa.

just think about it, doing research in vietnamese will surely get u better results than research in english (too touristy results). and even though on the surface they buay gum but end of the day they still ok with each other one lah. i'm in the south and i don't really see ppl prejudice against ppl from the north, and many from the north work in the south for a long time also.
