Hi all!

May I ask for opinions and recommendations on food and shopping areas in HCM?

Airbnb is in District One and we will probably visit 4P and Secret Garden for our meals. Wondering if there are any more local options which are wallet friendly.

As for shopping, it will mainly be for fashion and souvenirs to bring home. I do note that there are many malls and night markets but as we will only be there for the weekend, would like to ask for recommendations which are the tourist traps we should avoid.

Crystal Jade price is around Singapore price I think. Not particularly cheap if I remember correctly (last went in Oct)

Local options? You can try the oc aka seafood shells snails. Not the typical snails you see crawling on the streets. District 4 Oc Oanh is the most famous. Try the chilli crab craws and fried lard snails,butter/cheese oysters etc Crab craws Càng ghẹ rang muối

For shopping, Van Han Mall is one of the newer and shopable mall. Landmark 81 is a new 81 storey building with singapore malaysia style food court inside. To go up to 81 floor to see the night scenery, you need to pay 810k vnd, roughly $48.

Yes the Chinese food in hcmc are not cheap.

This one is some canto food operate by some singapore company.

their serving is dame small.

Try mon hue, is a chain of restaurant in vietnam.
They are relatively cheap

for food, those 2 are good choices. Local options that are more wallet friendly, you can try Pho Hoa at Pasteur street, that's pretty famous and have many customers. Or u can try Hu Tieu Thanh Dat, it's pretty good and very very crowded, mostly locals. Both are in District 1.

For shopping, u can go saigon square or russian market. Saigon square is ofc kind of like a tourist trap but most people go there anyway. You can still bargain and get a decent deal. They sell mostly fakes if that's what you are looking for. Russian market (along Vo Van Kiet) has a lesser tourist crowd, likewise, sell all the fake goods, mostly bags and sportswear, winter clothing.

you'd be suprised at what the vietnamese can afford these days. they are very willing to spend. of course we are talking about different groups of people but in general, the vietnamese are getting wealthier these days.

Mon Hue kinda toh already... just news from 1-2 months back. they have been making loss year after year. quite jialat. i can imagine also, no one really eats at their chain restaurants anymore.

Mon hue not sure if close yet but pho hung confirm closed.
it made no sense to open pho hung when they can see pho at mon hue.

Also local don't eat mon hue as they can get much better Vietnam food with lower price at their local market

I am actually looking to get a pair of sneakers and if possible, CNY clothes and stuff this trip (no need to be branded) so wondering if there are any factory outlets as well.

For snail. You can try Oc Dao in D1, they are very successful and the food is pretty good.

My personal favourite is Oc Sua at Binh Thanh but that may be a little out of the way.

You don't need to tell the grab driver. Just key in the address and he will bring you there.

I prefer Quán Ốc Sáu Nở, which is directly opposite Oc Oanh.
I used to eat at Oc Oanh as well... after being introduced to that place by Grandmaster FW
But after a while I noticed Quán Ốc Sáu Nở and I have been visiting there ever since cuz the place is cleaner

Well... Chinese food are generally more expensive in Vietnam based on a few handful of Chinese restaurants I visited.

Are there more affordable ones? I guess there is... But probably I will need to dedicate more time to explore the small streets of D6 n D5

if u are interested in boutique shops, u can head down to nguyen trai street that stretches from d1 to d5. iirc there are also adidas and nike stores. factory outlet i just can remember seeing 1 nike factory outlet in district 4 but is a bit out of the way.
