Hi, anyone can recommend good place to change sgd to dong? Have read this thread and so far, many have stated HCMC airport is better than our local rates. But their best is the goldsmiths. Etc any to recommend in district 1? Tia!

I think a good balance between cost and hassle is to book hotels on your own but get the hotels to help you book the train/bus tickets between Lao Cai and Hanoi. Then book a suitable halong bay tour separately as they will likely include pickup and return from your hotel. Of course, if you don't mind spending a little more, you can get a tour operator to do all for you.

Change in Ben Than Market. Rates are better than Google's Conversion rate. I got cheated about $12 per person when I changed my money at the airport....

For nightlife, go to Bitexco financial tower to enjoy the sunset. Beautiful scenery with lots of nice ppl around. Made friends with a guy from Dubai there and 2 ladies from Chilè. Next if you feel energetic, go to Lush for clubbing. Lots of tourists and locals there with great music playing. Drinks are very cheap too. Oh and there's no entrance fee, so don't worry about that. For sth much cheaper, head to the backpacker Lane which is full of shisha joints, pubs, clubs etc. But I still prefer going to lush as it's more upscale and there's a better mix of sexes and ppl are much friendlier and open to you too. The pubs and clubs at the backpacker Lane seems to be filled with prostitutes (lady dancers) and drugs. So Yuppp. Oh and sinhtourist was great, I took 3 tours with them (mekong delta+vinh long, tunnel+cao dai temple and monkey island tour) and only paid $60 per person for the 3 tours which includes lunch too. The tour guides were really knowledgeable and friendly. The distance we travelled with Sinhtourist was over 800km lol. Things to try are the snake wine, shooting a Garand M1, taking a speedboat through the mangroves, appreciate nature on board a ferry at mekong delta, understand the war at War Remnants Museum and feed a crocodile with a fish lol. Enjoy Vietnam! :)

D1, near Ben Thanh is the Ha Tam or Mai Van gold smiths shop. Change there best. I always change at Ha Tam.

thinking of using 1 of these tours below

http://trekkingsapa.com/tour/sapa-group-tours/sapa-off-beaten-track-2-days-2-nights/

http://trekkingsapa.com/tour/trekking-tours/sapa-easy-trekking-3n2d/

main difference is one comes back via overnight rain and one comes back via bus. for the overnight train option we will reach hanoi at 5am plus in the morning. not sure if we are able to check into any hotels or whatsoever. for the bus option it reaches back by 12midnight. any suggestions?

I traveled by train back and went for another trip straight away ... another sinkie couple I met took a morning flight back home

Arrived hanoi airport today. Saw the exchange rate of the nearest exchanger is 15.8k nia. Damn lousy. As changed in SG already didnt go hunt for more rates

Also, when buying sim card, they will only push those 150k, 200k cards, doesnt show the full available sim plans.

us dollar is still the best currency to bring to vietnam unless you can find goldshops! you are at a disadvantage if you exchange non us dollar such as sgd and euro at banks and official places.

try getting sim cards from street vendors that display signboards showing prices. or ask your hotel staff for help. one sim card should cost not more than 100k with enough credits to last you 4-5 days of data use.
