I have taken countless grabcar rides in Vietnam... very rare the driver will propose to take a "less jammed" route with added fees.

Anyway, for this incident in hanoi, you were departing from where and heading to where?

Yup 5* rated grab driver. Took from the museum of ethnology to nearby beer street during evening hours. I decided to drop complaint since it is not a huge fees proposed although it left a bitter taste in me as the driver literally mocked me saying "see, told you there is traffice jam which you don't believe".

From Vietnam museum of ethnology to old quarter Beer Street... There are two common ways to go there.

But... Both ways are heavy traffic throughout the day because your driver will need to drive through many sections which have heavy traffic....

To me imo... If the driver "tu" me like that...I will say. It's alright, it's ok. Just stick to the plan

I am sure this driver has done this many times to other riders

Yup stood firm throughout the trip, told him no rush, and insisted driver to follow the route mapped out by grab app. If he was any bit unhappy, he should just cancelled the job.

The only time whereby I will pay cash to the grab driver in Vietnam are
1) I instructed the driver to go another route
2) I asked the driver to wait for me and drive me back especially if I am going to some ulu place or it's thunderstorm

Food and grab car is much cheaper than Sg.

From Da Nang city to airport, grab was 42k+10k.
From HCM TSN airport to district 1 hotel near Ben Thanh was 72k+10k.

A bowl of pho around 58k, ice milk coffee 15k. Just to give you an idea.

Btw, beer is damn cheap, about 1/3 of Sg price.

$100 more than enough.
I spend $280 only for 2 of us for 3d2n and we went to 2 very good restaurants
If u stick with street food, 1 day I tink $20-30 max nia

The regular "kopitiam" food stalls and drink stalls in Vietnam are not very expensive.
25K to 35K for pho.
Cai png around 25k to 40K
Banh mi as low as 12k
Ca phe sua da for 10K

Unless you visit those stalls which are extremely popular... It will cost around 80K to 100K per bowl of food

The troublesome is not using SIN cc. the troublesome part is to create a members account with a local vn phone number, Vietnam ID number and probably valid home address.

I usually just go down to the cinema and pay over the counter

There are three main companies:
- CGV
- BHD
- Lotte Cinema

There is also Cinebox and Galaxy

I usually go CGV or Galaxy depending which one is near, and they have gold class ticket or VIP

"gold class" ticket is very affordable in vietnam. CGV gold class is sround 110-120K

mainly cafes and food in the small roads branching out from Nguyen Van Troi Street and Hoang Van Thu Street

the food there is extremely cheap, especially those food stalls and drink stalls near govt primary, sec and high schools.

milk tea like 6000. fried rice, friend noodles like 20K

D2... i hope you are not staying in the inner areas of D2 whereby the Condos are built. The travelling distance and time is crazy
personally, i don't like to stay in D2 because there is a timing restriction on the roads, like some of the main roads will be closed after 8pm/9pm...
If you are riding motorbike or car, you will need to make a big de-tour
