Indeed very difficult without hearing the pronunciation. We are so used to the english spelling to pronunciation already, the viet language just break all the rules for what we have learned since young.

Okay, so I have read through the past 40 pages or so for the recent information. Have gathered a few, and want to ask some.

Am planning to go to Hanoi > HLB > Sapa, actually. But it kind of seem like HLB is trapped in small space, and Sapa is trekking only (or mostly?). I want to venture out a little more, to travel around with bike around the city. So I may want to change my plan to Hanoi > Da Nang > Hoi An > Hue but probably not enough time so have to adjust which needs you people input. I will be going for 6D/5N most probably.

I see the current price to go Hanoi like not cheap, roughly 300 bucks, and most with stops in between making the whole travel time to Hanoi about 7-9 hours. I'm looking for a more direct flight. Or another way is to go SG > Da Nang > XXX > Hanoi (return).
Which would be more recommended?

The timing of the flight is also not very good now, afternoon go, and early morning flight back. Oh, my plan is to go around mid July. Any promos or discount?

And how far apart are Da Nang, Hoi An, and Hue?

You can fly to HCMC which is far cheaper. Then take the bus to Hoi An which roughly takes a day I think. From Hoi An, you can rent a bike and visit Danang directly which is about 25 minutes away, don't need to stay in Danang.

From Hoi An onwards you can take a sleeper bus to Hanoi, take a few days to explore around. Then about USD10 for a one way bus to Sapa.

At Halong Bay, you can go straight to Cat Ba islands from Hanoi or book a cruise 3D or 2D or 1D up to you. For 2D and 3D, you will get to visit Cat Ba islands and Halong Bay.

For Monkey Cruise 3D, you get to go a private island called Monkey Island located at Cat Ba.

For Sapa, you can just enjoy the scenery or ride around on a bike if you don't wish to trek.

From Hanoi you can take a bus or a train back to HCMC directly. But it'll be a long ride.

Only issue is the wait in between flight. Do you know if I can get out of the airport then back during the wait?

Yes, good to skip Hanoi. For only 6 days, I think you should just stick to 1 region. Either choose central Vietnam or North Vietnam. Both will have plenty to keep you occupied for 6 days.

To Danang, you can fly to HCMC, clear immigration, and walk over to the domestic terminal.

Since you have already cleared immigration, you are free to wonder around anywhere. You can leave the airport, and infact, you have to, because the domestic airport is next door and you'll have to walk out of the international airport and walk over (about 5 minutes walk).

But the wait for the next flight is probably just a couple of hours, so no point going anywhere else. The domestic airport is small and simple, but it's reasonably clean with plenty of seats. There's also a restaurant. Use this time to get a prepaid SIM card so that you can surf the web to pass time.

When I was there, I spent 2 days in Danang, 3 Days in Hoi An, 2 Days in Hue. I mean full days, not including travel.

Depending on what you like to do, Danang can be interesting or boring. There are beaches, temples, a giant Kuan Yin statue, museums, the riverside, the Dragon Bridge, and the Marble Mountains.

Hoi An is a place to relax and chill. There are some points of interest (Japanese bridge, Clan houses, etc), but I feel the main attractions are the good food, very tourist friendly setup, cheap drinks, and the beautiful riverside shophouses. It reminds me of Luang Prabang. You can sign up for a free bicycle tour conducted by university students who want to show you their country and also improve their English. All they ask is that you speak to them in English, and they'll bring you around the countryside for free. I went for it and it was excellent.

Hue's 2 main places of interest are the imperial tombs and the Imperial palace. The palace was however pretty much destroyed and is being rebuilt. I went 2-3 years ago and probably only 20% of the palace compound was done. I was actually pretty disappointed. In terms of scale and design, it's like a mini version of the Forbidden City in Beijing, but with most buildings destroyed. You have to check what's the current status now.

No HCMC is a very lively and vibrant place. It's so different from Singapore that I would say it's not boring at all.

Just walking around and seeing how the Viets live and spend their time is fascinating.

In terms of attractions, most are war-related museums (although some of them can be quite interesting) and some temples, but you can also take a Mekong tour which includes a night's stay at the biggest city of the Mekong Delta (Can Tho) and see the morning markets. If I were to do it again, I'll probably spend one more day in Can Tho just to feel the vibe of a agricultural city.

Do you recommend going to Hue first or Hoi An if I were to land on Danang? What about the night spot there? I see that Hoi An is actually quite near to danang, so I could actually rent a bike and ride over right?

I will note of the attractions there at each place, but decide where to when I'm there.

Just came back from HCMC.

Those going and wants to stay near district 1, this boutique hotel is relatively new and in a quiet alley. Aircon is new, bathroom is new, bed is new .....wifi in some rooms is spotty though.
