As encountered by the locals, there are indeed many snatch thieves around. Not advisable to stand at the roadside flaunting your valuables as these snatch thieves ride motor bikes. I haven't encounter yet, but when I use my phone near the road, my local friend will quickly come over and cover my phone with her hand. At first I thought she was acting weird, until she explained about the thieves.

If anyone is going HCM, do go find the Saigon Lunch Lady (google her! she got quite popular among backpackers due to a visit from anthony bourdain). She sells a damn good bowl of soup noodles with tonnes of liao. That black stuff is pig's blood.

See my review from two of my visits.

Why is blood unhygienic? If the animal is healthy, the blood will be OK. If the animal is not healthy, the meat, liver, etc are also unhygienic and we still eat them.

This is more of social conditioning. Those under 30 are not used to eating blood, so it is weird. Strangely, many will eat a rare/medium-rare steak with blood oozing out without even thinking twice. But blood is served all over Asia, including Hong Kong, Thailand, Taiwan, and Vietnam, and I've yet to read about any disease outbreak due to this.

Are sashimi and steaks eaten raw deemed to be unhygienic? On the same vein then, raw eggs? The blood curd is nutritious and may in fact be too rich for some people.
