Thanks for the review link. I also watched a few YouTube reviews of the Eero Max 7, and its Wi-Fi performance is impressive, even with wireless backhaul.

WiFi performance should be okay based on the reviews, not that impressive with its high list cost, but acceptable for the current generation of WiFi 7 router.

With the VQ pricing, I think it is a decent option for people without high requirement for firmware features and just care about wireless performance. I expect some power users may use it in AP/bridge mode, since they may have better main router.

The old VQ ONT/ONR are based on GPON technology.
GPON limit -- download 2.488Gbps, upload 1.25Gbps.

The new VQ bridged ONR for 3Gbps/5Gbps/10Gbps plan is based on XGS-PON technolog which supports download/upload up to 10Gbps in theory (8.2Gbps to 8.3Gbps typical in practice).

So yes you need to change from the old GPON ONT/ONR to the new bridged XGS-PON ONR.

Let's wait for the reports of the vendor and model of the bridged ONR.
Tmr I have an appt to install the new ONR for 3Gbps.
Will update on the vendor & model after the installation.

It's a pretty good deal.

5Gbps plan without router for 24 months: $56.99 * 24 - $240 = $1127.76

5Gbps plan with eero max 7 (2-node) for 24 months: $86.99 * 24 - $240 = $1847.76

So, you're paying $720 for a 2-node eero max 7, which is worth $1560.

eero Max 7 (2-node) option is a good option if you like it. If you do not like it or you have better options like using Unifi ecosystem (eg: UDM SE plus U7 Pro), then you may still want to go for the no router option.

And usually some people will start to dump the eero Max 7 on Carousell and the effective price will go down pretty fast. Existing example if the Starhub issued TP-Link EB810v and MR issued TP-Link Archer BE805 (10G capable WiFi 7 router), both have the price down below S$400 in Carousell.

I expect eero Max 7 dual-pack to be below S$1000 BNIB in Carousell pretty soon. Usually my prediction was not correct as the price is often below my prediction...

Dongknows review of eero Max 7 is not positive.

In return, take note of the caveats of the eero Max 7. Such as requiring subscription for basic services including security which is free on other routers like Asus.

As a consequence, it's CSA rating is that of 1 out of 4 stars.

CSA ratings of 1 and 2 are actually both okay. But the need of subscription for basic security services for Amazon eero can be an issue for people who care a bit about home network security.

Reference discussion.
Asus is the better ones to include AIProtection in the router. New TP-Link and Netgear routers will need subscriptions for more advanced security features, but at least they provide basic security features for free. On the other hand, there are other options like Pi-hole or Adguard Home to help out. Some may arguePi-hole and Adguard Home are better. More advanced users will then recommend more advanced firewall for even better protection (eg: pfSense firewall + pfBlockerNG + IPS/IDS, etc)

That's true, the subscription-based model is debatable. However, since I use ONR as a router, those advanced features don't seem useful to me, even if they are free.

recently VQ came to change my modem (to one with 4 ports LAN).
i believe it was an ONR and default set as router.
so when i connected my Orbi mesh, it detected the ONR in router mode and establish a subnet starting from 10.x.x.x

so i have to asked VQ to change the ONR to bridge mode. thankfully that helped solved the connection problems for my NAS to my phone devices.

The engineer told me default come in bridge mode with 10G port activated only.
The remaining 4 GE ports not activated.
To activate it then have to call Viewqwest backend to do so but then no more bridge.

Nice updates.

Looks like a pretty new model from FibreHome 烽火通信, as I can not find anything from the Internet about this model.

did you get the $30 off for 12 months promo?

I'm got this modem a couple of days ago, the 1gbps ports should be activated by default

there is also a usb 3.0 port at the side but I'm not able to get it working

below is my laptop ax client speed test

The 1G ports not activated is what the engineer told me, so far haven't test it out.
Maybe later in the evening when free I will test see.
What is the $30 off promo?
I remember I took the offer to pay for 1 year subscription & got 2% off the 1 year.

That is interesting.

It seems to me that VQ wants to standardize on the bridged XGS-PON ONR now and phase out the GPON ONR for older 1Gbps/2Gbps/2.5Gbps plan users.
