I think his dad was the only one who actually attempted to do his job to bring up a responsible young man.

Looking at the way the mom defended him in the beginning, she was the one who gave the impression to Amos that his dad is the evil one. The last thing you want to do when one parent is discipline the child is to have the other parent being the exact opposite. Good cop bad cop does not work in parenting. Ironically, this was what made Amos the deviant he is today.

The road to hell is paved with good intentions.

Inconsistent parenting with extremely inconsistent teachings.

And u throw in 2 overdoting grandparents in the mix and in the family staying with then, the equation goes out of whack. Cos the father is the only person in the household out of 4 adults to do the discipling. 1:3 ratio, 3 sure kena seen as "good" (never mind they are raising a monster and hide under the pretext of "i don't understand what he does.").

Poor child development is not equivalent to bad parenting though.

The amount of time where a child spent growing up plays the main part of development. No matter how much parents play a part, if the kids spent most of his time elsewhere growing up, they will be influenced by that external source. Let it be from school, circle of friends and the internet.

For Amos, the biggest source of influence was from the internet. The reason he ended up like that was because he idolised the westerns too much. That's why he picked up that accent even though he had never stayed in western countries before.

Actually, many Singaporeans are also influenced from the internet. For example, some people grew up with animes. They end up idolising Japan and adapt Japanese nicknames. That's how internet shapes a person growing up. It depends how much you can control and allow it to influence you. For Amos case with his western-influence dreams, it has become too extreme till he become like that. If internet doesn't exist, Amos would've a better self-esteem towards his Asian identity and wouldn't end up like that. It's the society which created Amos.

There's no way to avoid this. Banning modern kids from internet have more con then pros in this age of technology. Nowdays education and knowledge relies alot on internet and social media. The minimal thing you can do is to keep track on your kids internet history. Make sure he don't start idolising something to the extreme to the point he develop low-self esteem towards his own asian/singaporean/race identity.

So rude, i watch so much hentai also never adopt nip name nor go around raping girls

When discipline someone need to tell them the logic and reason why they are being punished.. the problem with asian parenting they just whack without telling why... You can see Amos is quite stupid for not following the laws in both countries... And this itself is the failure of his upbringing..

Proverbs 13:24
Whoever spares the rod hates their children, but the one who loves their children is careful to discipline them.[/QUITS]
If a man has a stubborn and rebellious son who will not obey the voice of his father or the voice of his mother, and who, when they have chastened him, will not heed them, then his father and his mother shall take hold of him and bring him out to the elders of his city, to the gate of his city. And they shall say to the elders of his city, “This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious; he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton and a drunkard.” Then all the men of his city shall stone him to death with stones; so you shall put away the evil from among you, and all Israel shall hear and fear. (Deuteronomy 21:18–21

You never stone your naughty children??

seriously though, if Amos kena deported, they will send that troublemaker back here?

Before he was a minor, now he is NS defaulter, serve DB first then maybe NS before going AWOL and then DB for life (probably never ending cycle of DB then AWOL then DB then AWOL until he cannot run anymore or >40years old then Changi Prison)

his early childhood influence was just misguided. during formative years a young brain is easily influenced and molded.

i have met some teenagers who read or got influenced by stuff they read online or by ppl and their behaviour and method of thinking totally tilt in that direction.

one was some bruce lee fanatic and another is some renaissance classicism fanatic. traits all the same one. you cannot have a normal conversation with them. they are totally desync with the rest of the world.

He might be an NS defaulter now, but if he comes back I would not put him into active service, just send him straight to DB like those Seventh Day Adventist types.

Because honestly, no PS or PC or OC or CSM deserves the trouble of handling someone like him.

This is the social contract agreed upon by all of us to function properly in this society, if he constantly violates his own side of the social contract he cannot be expecting us to uphold our own end.
