i’d say its a same dialect with different slang.. teochew is more melodic n hokkien rough n crude.

dialect linguistic expert @ponpokku can tell u more.

they are more like cousins from the same ancestors. the diff ish basically on what they keep from the ancestor.
for eg, the ancestor may have A, B, C traits, hokkien kept A but lost C, teochew kept C but lost A,
then they oso have common trait B.

hokchew, hokchia, hokching etc ish closer to eastern hokkien.
the local hokkien ish southern hokkien.

Anyway ethnic Chinese are so integrated that now dialects are almost irrelevant...

wah biang dun anyhow lah. this ish called 互文見義 in chinese. means they are talking about the same thing from different angles.
teochew hao lian, hokkien hao dian, 潮州好臉, 福建好展, means both have their showing-off traits but in different manner.

other examples like 東張西望, 南腔北調, doesnt mean 'look east and watch west', 'southern accents and northern tones'.
it simply means 'looking out in ALL directions', and 'ALL ppl with different speaking habits'.

Why Hokkien song always lyrics got lao bark sai?
Teochew songs don’t have.
Both considered descended from Minnan language, therefore closely related.
Eg 拖鞋 in Mandarin is 鞋拖 in both Teochew/Hokkien. Many words are topeng from Mandarin for both dialects.

this ish likely from their non-mandarin roots. who say teochew dun have? how u say mother hen? female dog?
if u look into non-chinese languages, u will find similar traits like nasi lemak, mee goreng. all topeng oso.

if you listen carefully, teochew words will never end with the "t" consonant.

for e.g. 7 in hokkien is "chit" but in teochew is chik. number one in hokkien is "dei it" but in teochew is "doi ik".

used to have, but teochew swa-tao region gradually lost it in the last 2 centuries. swa-buey region hai lok hong still maintained.
hokkien ish slowly losing it too. esp 漳州 region.

basically,
hokkien say -n, teochew say -ng. 分 = hoon vs hoong. 新 = sin vs sing.
hokkien say l-, teochew say n-. 南 = lam vs nam, milk = ling vs ni.
hokkien say bh-, teochew say m-. 免 = bheng4 vs meng4, 明 = bheng2 vs meng1.

mix of both. there ish 3-4 prominent groups there.
hokkien or hoklou, hakka, and teochew, and then they all know how to speak canto.
for eg the 免 above, hokkien say bheng, hai lok hong will say mian/mien, teochew say meng.
