Guys, can we have more constructive discussion here? Long time lurker but gradually seeing the death of this forum despite the uptick in interest in quality menswear in SG.

Anyone else know of other hangouts/discussion places online for menswear in SG? SG Reddit is horrible and full of people only wanting to talk about HDBs, and they think anything more than a t-shirt and baggy shorts is overdressing due to the "weather".

Recently collected my tenth suit, all of which are either MTM or bespoke. Maybe time to start tailoring other types of clothing.

Then you've come to the wrong place.

Guy asking about Florence and then getting directed to a Chinese copy town of Naples should tell you all you need to know about this forum.

I think the issue is the perception of an 'ideal' or 'perfect' suit is very subjective and different for everyone. This is made even more complex by tailors having different strengths.

When we talk about quality tailoring, we mean:
  1. Quality fit ( This is a given as we are tailoring and not buying RTW clothes. The reason to tailor is because we want a great fit)
  2. Quality construction
  3. Quality fabrics
  4. Quality aesthetics ( e.g pick stitching and Milanese buttonhole that doesn't add much functionality)
  5. Quality price and therefore value
Price has a direct relationship with quality of construction, fabrics and aesthetics. Different people have different needs and different budgets. A banker may well afford a full canvassed suit for the added durability as the suit is worn daily/often. However, someone who wears a suit to attend 1-2 wedding dinners a year may not require a full canvassed suit.

And precisely because people have different needs and budgets, there are also different tailors with different price points to cater to them, e.g Bespoke, MTM or the neighbourhood tailor or alteration shop like Seah Im tailor. They have their own clientele and survive enough to create their own value to their customers. Their customers in turn have their own opinions/preference on what "works for them" and express them here.

Ultimately, you are the one tailoring and if you are happy with your tailoring experience, who can tell you otherwise? This forum is on "where to tailor clothes" , the title is broad enough to encompass different types of tailoring customers, not just the customers with bespoke tailoring budgets. While many forumers can post their opinions, ultimately, it is yourself to do your own due diligence and make your own judgement because only yourself know what you need or want best and your financial situation.

Have fun tailoring!

How much waist suppression is good? I feel like my suits made back in Iris tailor days had extreme waist suppression so I was very used to this style, and had a lot of compliments from the ladies.

But my recent suits the tailors always recommend a looser waist with plenty of room. The girls all say it's "boxy" looking. I got sixpack so its not like I'm fat. When I asked, two different tailors both said the looser waist is nicer. Is it simply my outdated perception?

If you don't have an opinion of your own, it'll depend on who you trust more: the ladies in question, or your (hopefully professional) tailor.

Most ladies are not passionate enough about mens' tailoring to have an informed opinion on how suits should look. However, if you wear a suit mainly to impress girls, then of course you should go with whatever they want!

Thanks, I went back to the tailor and it was simply an issue of me taknig bad photos that messed with the angles and perception. Used a larger mirror with a further away shot and it was fine.

Hi guys, any recommendations on where to go for jacket sleeve alterations?

made a bespoke suit with one of the more reputable tailors but despite 3-4 fittings, they still can’t get the sleeves right, lots of bunching and pinching on the sleeves. Lost faith in this tailor already and feeling like the $2k I spent was really a waste.

I would think that the rest of the tailors will typically not accept alteration jobs for jackets made by other tailors.. but if anyone could recommend a place for alteration, that would be great

if It involves sleeve pitch, it will not be easy to alter, also how much are u prepared to pay?
your best bet are the old uncle tailors like Meiko Tailor, they do alterations.

Stitched custom also do alterations but dunno if they can do

https://stitchedcustom.com/pages/pricing

having already spent a couple thousand on this suit I would rather spend another few hundred to resolve the sleeves than leave it as it is. Sleeves right now are really bad in my opinion.

thanks will try reaching out to Meiko Tailor. Any other recommendations?

Price is not the surprise here, completion time of a year is the surprise, that's longer than a pregnancy.....
It depends on how frequent they come over for the fittings I reckon. That's the downside about international trunkshows.
