What material and style would be advisable for a tall guy, not so slim *ehem* with obvious beer belly and love handles?
Ok, I'll admit it, grossly out of shape.
Any advise from you fashion gurus?

It depends actually in yr overall appearance if u r tan.. fair or light tone skin colour etc.
Since u stated that u r tall i gues abv 180 u r safe in most of the shirts.
U can go for the basic colour to be safe white blue etc. U can check out raoul site to give u an idea.

If you are out of shape, try to stay away from simple plain shirt it might look more rounded from far. My advise go for strips shirt, the visual impression will be better from far.
Afterall, its the overall impression how well u can carry off the shirt using the correct matching pants and shoes.

Please avoid fabrics which are thin and too soft. These tend to cling to your body... making your tummy and out-of-shape chest even more obvious.

But will the thick material make the wearer feel too warm etc? I guess there is a trade-off.

Not really... depends on the fabric itself really. Most 2plys are ok and very comfy
I'm no guru so I also dun exactly know how describe those fabrics heh. I just know the cotton feels more like thin t-shirts to me... after a while will have "fur" sticking out. Most likely to come from the $50+ $60+ range of fabrics.
I had an old tailored shirt from Men's Tradition passed down to me by my bro quite long ago(our sizes quite similar and that time havent started tailoring myself yet) but i rem trying it out... and looks damn unflattering so i never wore it.

2ply shirtsare okie lah...unless u are those who sweat alot one or ur job needu tostay in the sun for long time.

stripped shirt are the best..MAybe u want to try dark based with blue/red or whilestrips...

will "make" ur body shape looks nicer...(at least it work for me )

heyy... thanks!

If I were to make shirts or pants, is there anything in particular that I need to be telling the tailor (with reference to my size, that is - 1.82, 100++ kg)? Never tailored anything before, so just wondering.

Also, I need to make a couple of suits and casual blazers. Any special styles or cuttings that I need to go for, or avoid, for that matter?

for pants>> i prefer to tell the tailor to sew extra stitches near the butt area... cos need to sit / squat often.

for Shirt, i find u need to emphasize on the the RIGHT shoulder length.. If not, some tailor tend to make the shoulder length slightly/much longer than ur one (for comfort sake)

u're a very large man...
too tight it will accentuate your tummy
too loose will make u look bigger

Haha... thanks for pointing that out icyspawn.
Those two things are precisely what I am trying to avoid, hence my asking for pointers here.

The tip about asking for extra room in the buttock area is priceless, many many thanks. The part about the shoulder length, do you mean the length between the neck and the shoulder joint?

Take a look at your shirts... the top part of the shirt(where the sleeves are connected to) should end above your shoulder joint.

Im going to BKK, anyone has a good tailor to recommend there?

http://thehouseofgentlemen.blogspot.com/

He is quite recommended by people in this thread.. So far, i have never make shirt with him YET (soon will go)...

But judging from the updated information in his blog, i will say he is Improving and expanding.

In terms of choices/design of fabrics, i will say he is ONE of the BESt among those that i hvae seen, experience and heard.
