4GB RAM is pretty low, if you’re going to BT I highly recommend as much RAM as you can get (8GB min, 2x8GB if you can afford it).

It will allow high speed downloads in µTorrent to cache in memory. Thus you won’t see dramatic bottlenecking or system slowdowns when µTorrent has to write to disk frequently.

The other specs (as you can see from rebuttals to the bad advice) are more than enough for TV viewing on the laptop itself (or to 1080p HDTV).

TS, check your laptop spec what is max ram and if have extra ram slot. A 2x4GB laptop ram is about SGD 100. I upgraded my old laptop few months back.

As long as you are not doing video editing, 4GB is still sufficient for daily stuff and light gaming. Viewing 1080p tv is no issue with 4GB ram.

Just go all out like me and never have to worry. I have 32GB which is the max a non-server class mobo supports.

I am not tech savvy, I only know how to build my own PC and troubleshoot software issues. Hardware/Software issues, not really a problem but I am an absolute dunce when it comes to anything about Networking.

We are a DINK family, if I want to watch US TV shows streaming, with low lag to FPS/MMORPG servers (titanfall, COD, WOW, ESO, Wildstar), WHILE still torrenting and still hosting a game server at the same time, I presume ViewQuest 1000m is the ISP/Plan for me?

Lag is my main concern, not monthly instalment.

Traffic light ISPs are out since you torrent and they throttle hard.If money is not a concern ViewQuest 1000mbps seems good and reliable .Its bundled with freedom vpn for 24 mths too .Not sure if freedom vpn is good though not a vpn sexpert .

Is unlikely you can get anything less than 40ms ping to USA. 100+ms still achieveble. If any expert can advise

<40ms to US is impossible in current day's technology. I am not good with words though I recall some expert sharing something about light to travel the distance under optimal conditions, it is not possible to achieve below a certain xxx ms.

On opinion I have - start low such as 300Mbps or 500Mbps plan and see if it meets your household's needs. Upgrade can always be done if 500Mbps still does not satisfy demand. Wondering why? Because torrenting on VQ is so fast (total unrestricted) that it no longer hogs bandwidth and hence allow other usage to continue without interruption.

What I would suggest to invest from the savings in a lower plan (300 or 500Mbps) is on your network infrastructure at home. Wondering why? Cause most of the network infra in most households are yesteryear and cannot match or fully utilise the speed that FTTH (Fiber broadband) brings with it. Often, subscribers new to FTTH encounter bottlenecks in their home network infra or systems which is limiting their ability to hit max capability of FTTH.

PS: By the way, I believe ViewQwest has a free home network consultation service at the moment. Make use of it to have an assessment of your home network infra done and see what are the areas which needs investment to improve and allow family to maximise the FTTH connectivity.

You might have to wait a while for <40ms to the west coast. PC-1 is already 80ms, let alone from SG.

if im not wrong min ping to LA is 200ms

To summarize in layman terms (and based on limitations of my knowledge + input from other forumers):

In current day context, the realistic best latency possible from SG to US is around 120-140ms at least, provided the ISPs are using the best possible and newest available crossings and the best transits.

Otherwise, 160-180ms is practically what we (subscribers of VQ) have seen in real-world at this moment between SG to US (West Coast I think).

My HDB is still copper wires... when I do the VQ 1000 I intend to pay the contractor to do the Cat5e and faceplate through my house as well, so I guess that will cover the home infrastructure part?

Home Minister is gigantic consumer of bandwidth (seeder and leecher. up/down data is about 5gb/day min.), which is why I was considering the $149/month plan. At the end of the day, it is only $60/month more than the 500Mbps ($2/day) for the peace of mind knowing you are getting the most out of your leisure time.

I am easily annoyed by "Buffering... please wait".

yes that would be the best as wireless or other method will have speed drop. to maintain the speed cable is always the best option.

Viewqwest has some cable vendor that can help setup the cabling and faceplate.

ViewQwest consultation is free and I would suggest to let them assess and advice. Whether you end up choosing their contractor or your own, at least you know the network infra is 'design' by know-hows and done the right way.

There are details here and there which we cannot advice over the internet as it needs physical assessment.

how come there are still such limitations since the bandwidth/what not travels in light
