For Asus routers, do you enable DoS protection? The router manual on Firewall settings says:
On the Enable DoS protection, select Yes to protect your network from DoS (Denial of Service) attacks though this may affect your router's performance.

I’m unlikely a target for any DoS attacks. 😄

You can keep it as default (disabled).

For my RT-AX86U, recently I have enabled AIprotection, Traffic Analyzer Statistics and DoS protection, just to see if there are any performance hit or not. So far I do not see any performance degradation. Memory usage is also okay at 59% to 61%.

I use Pi-hole or Adguard Home to protect my home network and AIprotection is not really needed. Still I will recommend average users to turn AIProtection on to have some basic levels of protection for home network. DoS protection is probably not necessary for the average user.

For your RT-AX89X, I do not see any issues if you enable all these features. It has a quite powerful CPU.

So far, the Asus mesh system has worked very well. I'm very happy with the set up and all. There are a few quirks though.

1) Whenever I get into the Asus router app or the webGUI gateway, the three nodes will be offline. Sometimes one node, sometimes two and sometimes all three. But strangely, the wireless or wired clients connected to these nodes can still go on the internet. After a while, the nodes will appear online in the app or webGUI. My conclusion is that the app or webGUI is a bit slow to reflect the connections. I think the nodes were not really offline; the dashboard was just slow in updating the connection. That's my guess.

2) Overall, the experience is good in terms of handoff (the best part of it all) and speeds. But it fell short of my expectations in two connections which I use very very often. One is to backup files to my NAS from my MacBook using Chronosync app. I only get speeds like 4 Mbps. The other is exporting Microsoft OneNote from onenote.com. The speed is also around 4-5 Mpbs.

If there's a way to fix these will be great. Even an increase to 20-30 Mbps would save me a lot of time with the backup and download. What I understand is that the bottleneck is probably at the source. For instance, Microsoft could have set a limit of 4-5 Mbps for downloads at onenote.com. I can understand that. But for my Synology NAS which is within my own home network, there must be a way to increase the speed from 4 Mbps to a lot higher.

Does anyone know how?
