In the first place, NEA is wrong to say single use plastic bags.

The plastic bags have been used at least twice when it was thrown away.

First is to bag your purchases from.the store.
Second is bagging your rubbish before it goes into the rubbish chute.

The real single use plastics are those used to seal chilli bottles at the cap, or those wrapping a product or those used by transport companies. Again this shows the gov misses the real point on single use plastics.
Also used to store things in freezer, a lot of uses.

But they just follow AMDK practices.

Actually, I think the net benefit to environment is actually negative.
- reusable bags has higher environmental impact than plastic bag on a 1 to 1 basis, depending on the material, it can take as much as 5000 reuse before the bag produces a net benefit. That's like going grocery shopping every day for 20 years. How many people will still be using the same bag? :D
- it is not practical for most people to carry several reusable bags all the time just in case they need to go grocery shopping. So they will still end up needing to use plastic bags, this reduces the overall environmental benefit of this move
- people may travel home to drop off their work stuff before going out grocery shopping with multiple reusable bags, some may drive more as a result. 1 plastic bag is roughly equivalent to driving 160m. Pretty sure if they need to drive, the supermarket will be more than 160m. A 2km back/fro trip would end up with an environmental cost of more than 25 plastic bags :s13:
- then considerate people will still want to continue to bag their garbage so they will end up buying plastic bags...
Reusable bag need to wash after carrying wet fresh produce. Later environmental friendly got scold for using more water.

If stay old hdb, just wash the bin when it's dirty la. nothing wrong. if central refuse, you are paying S&CC fees for the town council cleaners to clean. If dirty means town council cleaners sleeping on their job.
They won't have the excuse to say coz of this more cleaning to be done and raise fees.

When bagged rubbish is thrown down now, the impact will burst the bags and scatter the contents.

Check out the image and video in this article. it seems most plastics bag does not burst on impact so easily. you can try pull the plastics bag with your own strength and see how tough and durable they are.

https://www.straitstimes.com/singap...s-most-eco-friendly-option-in-singapore-study

Most eco-friendly

1. Reusable plastic bags

Such bags refer to those often sold at the checkout counters in supermarkets for about $1. If each bag is used at least 50 times, it is the most eco-friendly option here.

2. Single-use plastic bags

Fourteen times the global warming potential compared with reusable plastic bags, even though these bags, often given out for free at supermarkets, may be the second-most eco-friendly option here.

3. Single-use biodegradable plastic bags

Sixteen times the global warming potential compared with reusable plastic bags.

4. Reusable cotton woven bags

Seventeen times the global warming potential compared with reusable plastic bags. However, researchers say cotton bags that are reused hundreds of times would make them a superior choice over a single-use item.

Least eco-friendly:

5. Single-use paper bags

Eighty-one times the global warming potential compared with reusable plastic bags.

First, those scholars in NEA and those who want to play righteous will never understand the physics.

At the height of which the rubbish is thrown down from the rubbish chute, say from 10th floor, on impact with the bin, the plastic bag will also burst. The contents will be scattered around.

Some will say at least the bag holds most of it, only a bit gets scattered out. Then it goes to the curry discussion, even in a plastic bag, the curry will still spill out on impact or crushed by the weight of the rubbish as it piles up. Anyway, when the compactor is operated, it crushes and compacts the rubbish, all the bagged contents are spilled out anyway.

Will the scholars tell us next to use double bags? Then that defeats the original purpose on cutting use of plastic bags.
you want town council to ask cleaner everyday flush the chute on every floor?

the main issue here is every floor the chute is gonna be filthy cause ppl are emptying their bins into the chute, with rubbish sticking along the walls on the way down.

besides being recycleable, most plastic bags are incinerated in sg along with other rubbish, so the issue is littering or dumping and lack of recycling?

It’s damn zek ark one
My level got one neighbour always throw in Unbagged. The rest of us have to take pails come out rinse and clean the refuse area for them.

buey tahan.
This is even when plastic bags are readily available. So it's people's attitude after all. There are many sources of plastic bags available if they really want.

Those whining now are likely the same ones complaining about teeth rot and jaw deformity when deprived of straws.

The ones who can carry food to their tables but afraid their brittle bones will shatter when returning their trays.

All part of the bigger problem. The government also doing a poor job of recyclables sorting during collection stage. Hence the low recycling level.

it really depends on the quality of the plastic bags. I notice Sheng Siong and Giant bags are quite weak and try not to put wet food waste in there like curry, coffee etc.

Stronger plastic bags are like those from NTUC and some from certain food establishments.

Charging for plastic bags will affect the poor more.

I won't be surprised it people throw raw as well as cooked pork, chicken, fish, noodles, etc, straight into the rubbish chute. That was what was done long ago during our grandparents/parents time.

It took us one generation to encourage people to tie up their rubbish and dispose them properly. Now, in the name of being environmentally friendly people are encouraged not to use plastic bags and to throw their uncooked/cooked food down directly.

What about hair and dust and waste paper after sweeping? And pad and tissue after wiping runny nose? They will be thrown down too?
