I'm fairly new to wine and developed a liking for red wine. Any recommendations for a good bottle of red wine from DFS? Budget about 30-60 if possible? Haha.

Hi apex84,

Welcome to the forum.

What kind of red wines do you like? Something light and fruity, or big and heavy? Any particular grape varietal or country that you fancy?

help on budget wines

Hi everyone,

need help to source 6 bottles of decent red wines under the price of $20. It is for a wedding lunch. The hotel has provided some but need another 6 for extras. Any suggestions?

I heard Long Flat from NTUC is rather ok. FYI, i think the hotel is serving a french merlot.

Thanks in advance.

under $20 is kind scraping the bottom of the barrel if you want a 'decent' wine. most of the wines at that pricing taste quite similar as they are all made with mass production grapes and manufactured for easy drinking.

nothing wrong with that, your best bet is at fairprice. any of their discounted stuff would do, plus now is the Christmas period so many of their wines are on sale. the usual suspects like long flat, lindemans etc... have an entry level wine.

merlots or shiraz will be fine as they will be usually smooth and fruity.

as others have mentioned, it really depends on the general style of wine u enjoy.

more fruit driven or more earthy/mineral in style? something more robust and rich or smoother and light?

i don't know all the DFS brands but u can look out for new zealand pinot noirs, quite fruity with some minerals and smooth in texture.

for something richer you have your classic aussie shiraz or go for wines from the Rhone Region in france.

Hi both thanks for the replies! So far the wine's I've tried are all pinot noir. I think I like something fruity with a slight spicy aftertaste, texture wise something robust and rich would be nice. I recently tried a bottle of Littorai Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir and really liked it but unfortunately that bottle cost $280! Was wondering if there was something similar but in a lower price bracket? Just over the weekend I finished a bottle of barefoot pinot noir ($25)and Wyndham Estate 2012 pinot noir ($37), I preferred the cheaper bottle!

get a rhone wine then from the sub regions of 'gigondas' or from 'cotes du rhone'.

i dunno what is available at DFS but the classic easily available cotes du rhone is the E.Guigal Cotes du Rhone.

chill it and let it decant for about 30mins - 1 hour or let it breathe in the bottle for several hours when you open in advance before enjoying.

when it's first poured it can be tight and rough. but with enough air it smoothens out.

Oh yes... EG Cotes du rhone is one of my fave french wines. When at discount, they can go around $30. Another is Perrin & Fils. I don't have much budget for wines...

Thanks ikileo. Just took a stroll at NTUC finest, Long Flat and Robert Mondavi Woodbridge going at ~$20.

Price is a gauge, not guarantee, of quality.

Anyway, other factors that affect whether you like a wine or not includes the weather, mood, company, food, order, temperature, time of the day and a host of other things as well.

If you like New Zealand Pinot Noirs try the Cloudy Bay Pinot Noir next time you are at the airport.. A little on the pricey side but it's one of the best around too..

by default, mascato is not a sparkling, but it does have version of sparkiling wine. A cheap and good version is the sparkling mascato from Brown Brothers (not much bubbles) or De Bortoli Pink Moscato (feels like a brut but not a brut).
Both are australian wines and fits your criteria of semi sweet and not very strong alcohol taste.
