if u like shiraz and want to try another style, head to the Rhone Valley in france. A suitable option you could try is the '07 Alain Graillot Crozes-Hermitage. It is made from 100% Syrah (Shiraz). Crozes-Hermitage is a region in the northern rhone. rhone syrah tend to be less heavy compared to the aussie counterparts and it's a good way to see how differences in region and climate can affect the same grape.

u can buy it at the Isetan supermarket wine sectino.

Yes...I tried the 99 vintage recently..but I think 05 is way better...the 2005 HV is S$49 currently..will try to get few of them when having promotion later if any....:)

they rarely have sales on this.

but for those who want to try new white wines, i highly suggest the Chateau Fesles "La Chappelle". Available at Carrefour. It is a dry white wine made from the Chenin Blanc grapes, which do very well in the Loire valley. it is this same grapes that make the sweet bonnezeaux as well. Chill the 'La Chappelle' lightly and let it breathe (it needs to breathe). It pairs very well with seafood and lighter dishes and has marvellous complexity for such an affordable price.

From the pic, the wine seems to be from the south of france. If a wine is labeled Vin de Pays (it translates in to Country Wine), it usually indicates an entry level wine. Since it’s a Vin de Pays d’Oc, it means that it’s entry level wine from the Languedoc-Rousillon region (south of France).

Merlot generally a makes a softer style of wine compared to other varietals which is why it’s rather tasty and pairs well with a wide range of food. I dunno where you can find this specific wine in SG but there are many entry level wines from good producers in good regions that you can start off with. Carrefour is one of the places you can look at without breaking your budget. Try entry level wines from the Rhone Valley, they are called Cotes du Rhone and the ones from good producers offer very good value.

Yellow Tail (YT) is the one brand the wine industry picks on because many experienced drinkers would rather top up a couple more dollars to drink better quality wine. Not saying they make terrible wine, but they don’t make good wine and life is too short to drink average wines. As for moscato in generally, it is a very palatable style of wine especially in SG due to its sweetness and we generally have a sweet tooth. There are many other high grade moscatos that delivery more complexity other than just sugar.

Good on you that you want to explore more. What is your current budget? When you first start off, you should start with getting a good grasp of typicity; meaning drinking deeply to recognize various varietals. Perhaps every month you drink a certain varietal, so lets say for August you only drink cabernet sauvignon (red) and chardonnay (white). And every month you change varieties. This is so you get a good handle at least on the wines.

You can join the next makan session, or class ;) , that I am trying to organize in August and we can share our experience and queries there together also

Thanks a lot for your patience!

I don't exactly have a budget yet (maybe max $50/bottle for a start?). I think I can follow your recommendation and get one varietal a month to get a feel of things.

Anyway, I'm flying soon and I thought I could grab some wine from the duty-free when I'm back. I don't remember I see DFS selling moscato before though (anyone can confirm?). Nevertheless, any red (or white) wine that is good to get for starters like me?

:D

where are you flying to? $50 for a bottle is a good way to start. u can get a lot of very good wine in that budget.

i'd rather you not buy from DFS 'cos what they minus off from the tax, they make back with the markups. in the end no point.

if u are going to a wine country or a place that has a good wine culture, they would usually be good wine shops to buy wine.

if u are a starter start with the lighter styles of wines rather than the heavy tanninc ones: a dry riesling or a pinot noir is a good way to start.

Interesting, I always had the misconception that because it is tax-free, stuff from DFS is cheap.

I'm going to Japan... :)

One of my fav shiraz from Aust is the 2006 Murray Street Vineyard Gomersal Shiraz. Full bodied, robust, soft tannins, deep red in color and very easy to drink. If decanted further, even easier to drink as it opens up. But... its so ex

i see u like your big shiraz. do try the cooler climate style of syrah from the northern rhone. the difference is rather startling.

@swirl84: Japan is one of the top wine markets in asia (and also the world). you will find many good wine stores there. there is a heavy skew towards french and italian wines in japan so you would have a pretty good selection.

Tried this for a start last nite. And I must say it is very pleasant to drink (I suppose moscatos are pleasant in general :p) Very fruity, sweet with a dry finish at the end.

August Wine Outing: The French
Date: 6th/7th Aug (Sat or Sun)
Time: Dinner (6.30pm)
Location: Saveur (Ali Baba Eating House, Foodstall No 3, 125 East Coast Road, Singapore 428810)
Website: http://www.saveur.sg/
Glasses: BYOG

This will be an affordable french dinner with french wine at Saveur (more info on their website). Let me know your budget and see if I can ask them to customize a nice set meal which we can enjoy with our wines. We will each bring a French wine (red/white/sparkling/sweet etc...) but the minimum value of each standard bottle of wine should be more than $30 (so that no one gets away with crap wine).

I would suggest that whichever wines you bring, we can taste them blind so we don't know what they are. So do let me know who is interested and what coloured wine you will be bringing. if you dunno what to buy, you can tikam tikam buy something more than $30 and see how it goes ;)

don't limit yourself to just bordeaux. There is a world of french wines that is worth exploring. Here are some retailers you can look at for some interesting french wines: Carrefour, Le Benaton, Isetan Supermarket, ewineasia.com, cafe-calva.com.sg, Grand Vin...just to name a few.

If possible, please try to bring along a +1, so that 5 people won't have to finish 5 wines by themselves.

Drinkers of all experience levels are welcome. Take this opportunity to learn more about wine!

Just wondering does this only come in a 37.5cl bottle? Went to Carrefour for a walk and saw that '05 is smaller than the '99 one.

as for the wine outing: please let me know your interest.

I'm ok with Saturday too! Will be bringing my wife. Can I bring the above? Will the 37.5cl bottle be enough?

Are you all driving there? Scared later drink can't drive.. haha :D

yeah sure u can bring it. dessert wines are meant to be drunk in small proportions anyway.

so it's:

ikileo + 1
reign + 1
swirl 84 + 1
if we have 1-2 more pairs that would perfect. i can't do too many people as well.

yeah they retail at half bottles, that's just how they roll...
