Next week I will be free for a Friday dinner (23/12) or Boxing day lunch/dinner (26/12). My preference will be Boxing day lunch.

I had a BYO wines session with my regular wines group this afternoon. Quite an impressive lineup spanning 5 decades with good mix of varietals and wines region.

It was a casual session at one of the guy's place. I brought the Irvine Grand Merlot '02. Having been decanted at home 1hr before bottled back and bring to tasting. It was showing quite well with Jammy fruits and thickly textured. Although served blind but many had guessed it was a new world Merlot as the varietal expression was so obvious.

I was surprised that the 1969 Barolo showing very well with plenty of tertiary notes and sweet fruits. Balance & mellow palate very similar to an aged Burg.

Yup from my limited experience there seem a few parallels between Nebbiolo/Barolo and Pinot Noir/Burgundy.
From my experience with Barolo, quite surprised to see light-coloured wines have such powerful, complex personalities. Really tannic, untouchable for the first 10 years.

Wanted to get some >10 yr old Barolos from Robert's WEA recently but the ones I wanted had all been sold.

About the wine outing, there are a couple of hols round the corner. I've no plans yet for:

24 Dec lunch
25 Dec lunch
26 Dec lunch & dinner
31 Dec lunch
1 Jan lunch & dinner
2 Jan lunch & dinner

Updated mine.

I received a question from my colleague who wants to buy 2 bottles wines as a gift and bring over to Malaysia when he goes back his hometown in 2 days time. So he asked for my recommendation of what to buy and he may buy it from Singapor duty free shop. Ok, he wants a smooth, non-dry (so I guess he means less tannic and with hints of sweetness) and approachable red with budget of $50 per bottle. So in my mind what I think of is new world Merlot and probably from Australia is more widely available.

I often feel difficulty (or rather not confident) in giving consultation to beginners because my palate are use to flavourful, structured and robust wines. I will not recommend wines that I don't think is good but I also afraid wines I recommend does not suit their palate. In this case I also find myself not familiar with what are the wines sell in duty free shop.

Can anyone give me some suggestion of what varietals/wines I can recommend to him? Probably those likely to be found at duty free shop. Thanks.

merlots are good. new world pinots are usually quite palate friendly and easily available at DFS. I was there a week ago.

young spanish wines do the trick as well...
