One of the way I learnt about various smells and tastes is through guided wines tasting and drink with some wine expert friends. After listen to their description on the nose and palate I will try to relate whether I can capture the same smell/flavour too. I don't have to smell my wallet or belt to learn how leather smell/taste

I tried Pavie 2005 before during a massive blind 2005 Bordeaux tasting but wasn't impress. What impressed me during that tasting was Leoville Poyferre and Angelus. Agree that Ch Pavie became a controversial wine after Perse took over. The price has rocketed since 2000 achieved perfect RP 100. But vintage prior to 1998 still quite relatively affordable. So 1988 is a very good buy.

Recently I got myself a bottle of 1978 Leoville Barton and I am very happy to add one more bottle of wine from my birth year and made by my best favourite producer

@ hkm: I tried Poyferre 2004 (half bottle) last yr, i must said tt i was very impressed by its heavy body, complexity and structure. strong and stylish. no wonder it is one of ur fav bottle. it is one of the few bordeaux reds which i can remember the taste. i have been trying to buy another Poyferre or its coursin (Barton) at the reasonable px, but, so far no luck ... good stuff!

it think if the provenance is good, the '78 could still be holding on well as it's a good producer.

Yup I also think that 78 Barton is still holding as it is one of the very good producer in Bordeaux and provided cellar condition is good. As least I'm confident it will be better than the 78 La Dominique we had earlier.

i have pretty limited knowledge for most of the bottles (esp those sub $100), for those i recognised, i cant afford them... just to share the lobang ...

yeah i got the email alert. all pretty good to top producers with good age on them. many of them, especially the barolos and barbarescos can age for decades more. but no $$$

I have 1 chance go out this month and I'm aiming for Crystal Wine's Bibi Testamatta Vertical Tasting on 11 Aug. I have been wanted to try this wine
since I learnt it from Drops of god manga. Bibi Graetz made his first vintage of Testamatta in 2000 and this wine was awarded Best Red Wine at the Bordeaux Vinexpo in 2003. This is actually their 2nd attempt to organise Testamatta Vertical Tasting. I signed up the 1st tasting last year but was cancelled due to lack of response. I see that they have been carrying this wines quite a while and on promotion on many occasion. So I think this wine is obviously less popular in Singapore and there are chances that this tasting may be cancelled again. If again the tasting have to be cancelled I will join you guys for this round session

By the way my friend asked me to join them at this Don Quijote but I have to give it a miss. Maybe someone here would be interested.

I am quite interested in the Testamatta vertical too, as you know I like Italian wines, especially producers who like indigenous grapes.

Quite interesting, the wine-maker is a mixed heritage foreigner to Italy, with artistic leanings - he designs the wine labels - and who loves old vines in the Fiesole area, of Colorino and Canaiolo - just north east of Florence, between the popular Chianti Classico and Chianti Rufina areas.

last nite drank a 2005 Natur Montsant Mas Franch Negre (Spain, Catalunya, Tarragona, Montsant) - 40% Cab, 20% Shiraz, 20% Grenache, 10% Merlot, 10% Carignan. Had it with spanish cold cuts, spanish cheese, quince and a burger.

Almost all Spain! Double decanted the wine and took about 2 hours for it to open up. Lots of cab notes but extra dimension given by the other varietals. Delicious wine but needs food. still a little rough around the edges but all in all a very tasty wine. my friend bought it through a recommendation from a very good wine store in UK last year.

really? I haven't had an Elderton Command before but I believe it's one of the top tier wines in Australia so it should keep for a pretty good time. i think it's a good buy for those who wanna get into it.

btw, got an email from Wein Vin: NDP Promo. Good deal acoss the board. My insight: his rieslings are good across the board, his german pinots (spatburgunders) are worth it, especially the higher tier but can get a bit pricey.

his champagnes, are very good across the board. you can't go wrong with the Pierre Peters or the Guy Charlemagne champers.

the rhone & bdx are decent but not my first choice. the burgs are not bad.

I had the Command 1999 in April and it's still good. We gave it 1-2 hours decant and it opened beautifully and continue to improve in the glass for another 1-2 hours.

It is drinking nicely now and I would think no problem to hold at least another few years although it may not be improving. Whether it is at peak very much depend on the style one prefer. Some people like upfront, fruit driven, powerful wine but other may like smooth, rounded, mellow and elegant wine
