I like to taste blind and I will wrap my wine. That is not to test our tasting skill but help to remove preconception of having seen the label. :)

I thought ALWAYS blind for our gatherings?

Think it'd be good, like hkm says, to remove any preconceptions, also to make us rack our brains a bit. Don't think I'll be able to name any sparkler blind heh...

If you ask me I say BLIND! This has always been a trademark of our wine gatherings, hasn't it?

Not just the brand but the colour of the label, design, logo etc does make interfere with the tasting process, I say!

According to the papers, Robert Parker has sold The Wine Advocate to 3 Singaporean investors for S$18 million..

If this is to be believed, there will be greater emphasis on Singapore as a wine market/ hub, with more events/ trade shows/ exhibitions held here.. Excellent news for wine drinkers/ collectors in Singapore!

Just wondering who the 3 investors from Singapore might be..

HKM, are you one of them?

Yeah I saw this news on other wine publications. Wonder why he's doing this.

Does this mean more selection in sg or higher prices?

Thought he wanted to retire but I guess they made him an offer he can't refuse.

I think pricing and selection of wines are market-driven so it's hard to say. As a wine market I think it's tough to compete with Hongkong for the brand names and mainstream regions but perhaps we can offer more variety and alternative region coverage, if the education and demand go hand-in-hand.

Like Mr Happy said, for sure there will be more wine events happening here - whether we can afford them will be another matter...

Good thing for it to be based here.. Just not sure if the locals are ready to receive it yet!

I think an edge Singapore has over HK is ironically, HK's proximity to China.. HK's market, being too close to China, can be too "China-led" and favouring the wines that pleases the China market rather than the global market..

Singapore's positioning is supposed to be more globalised and neutral to the French, Australian, Italian and other major wine producing regions and markets..

Agreed.

Btw there's an Italian Wine Clearance Sale at Crystal Wines :)

Good prices for standard-bearers like the Felsina CCR Rancia and Isole e Olena's Cepparello.

here are some promos from Epiphany Wines for wines in magnums from the 1990s.
MOQ is 3 bottles (assorted)

1996 Bodegas Fernando Remirez de Ganuza Rioja Reserva, Spain
Price S$190 nett/btl

The 1996 Reserva was also the product of a challenging vintage, “an average year for less meticulous producers”. It is a fragrant, fruit-driven wine that has ample savory fruit and a forward personality. It should drink well over the next 10 years. Bodegas Fernando Remirez de Ganuza is one of Rioja’s benchmark estates. It encompasses about 132 acres located in four regions of Alava Rioja planted to approximately 90% Tempranillo and 10% Graciano. The winery itself is located in the village of Samaniego. Upon my arrival at the Bodega in May 2010, I discovered a surprise. In addition to a vertical tasting of all the Reservas, Senor Remirez had prepared a similar vertical of Trasnocho, a wine that has never been exported to the USA. With all due respect, the greatest vintages from Bodegas Fernando Remirez de Ganuza in my opinion are 2004 and 2001. Trasnocho is Fernando Remirez de Ganuza’s take on a more contemporary style.

1997 Antinori Brunello di Montalcino Pian delle Vigne 1500ml, Italy Price S$299 nett/btl

This sexy, up-front 1997 Brunello offers aromas of lead pencil, cedar, espresso, and black cherry liqueur. Lush and medium-bodied, with sweet tannin, and a forward personality, it's a modern-styled effort that traditionalists may feel lacks the grip and tannin normally found in Brunello. Nevertheless, it is a delicious, already accessible Brunello di Montalcino to enjoy over the next 8-10 years.

4/5 Stars Decanter
17.5/20 Jancis Robinson

1997 Argiano Brunello di Montalcino 1500ml, Italy Price S$299 nett/btl

Deep garnet core with a ruby rim. Heady sottobosco aroma reminiscent of sweet pipe tobacco laced with the perfumed scent of violets. Deep plum flavor mingles with cherry jam, bitter chocolate and roasted coffee bean; very fresh and clear. The wine offers a superb sense of depth and harmony on the middle palate, and the tannins are firm but ripe. The long, silky finish is graced by an undercurrent of anise. Generous, suave, and delicious.

1996 Aldo Conterno Barolo Bussia 1500ml, Italy Price S$339 nett/btl

The dense ruby/plum-colored 1996 Barolo Bussia Soprana exhibits a promising, classic Nebbiolo/Barolo bouquet of tobacco, cigar box, rose petals, melted tar, and copious quantities of sweet black cherry fruit. Although impressively full-bodied, powerful, tannic, and dense, it is oh, so young and backward. Patience ... please! Anticipated maturity: 2010-2025.

92 points Robert Parker

1998 Domaine du Vieux Telegraphe Chateauneuf du Pape, Rhone Price S$299 nett/btl

Between 1978 and 2007, this 1998 is the greatest Vieux Telegraphe that was produced. It has taken a good decade for this wine to shed its tannins and come out of a dormant, closed period. It has finally emerged, and notes of iodine, seaweed, black currants, incense, and sweet cherries as well as hot rocks jump from the glass of this full-bodied, powerful wine. It possesses considerable elegance and purity, along with loads of raspberries and incense, in a round, juicy, rich style that is just emerging from the closet. The wine is still youthful and a pre-adolescent in terms of its ultimate evolution. Approachable now, it will continue to evolve for another 15-20 years. Bravo!
