Question. If I am going Shirakawago in feb, assuming ave temp of -5 to 5c, and -5 is probably in the middle of night when you are indoor, then would wearing Uniqlo (many branches here and cheaper) heattech inside, followed by fleece sweater and outside is ULD, 3 layers enough? If not, add another what layer is advsable?

And bottom can just heattech pants inside and jeans outside?

get the Extra Warm version of the Heattech, don't just wear one, wear 2 or 3 depends on your cold tolerance.

if u dun tolerate cold well like me, it will be good to get a long john. personally i find heatech isnt really a good base layer.

and if u are going to be outdoor often, maybe have a waterproof outer layer. ULD is not waterproof and if rain or snow seeps into the down, it will not be able to trap heat so well. of coz u can also use umbrella or raincoat if it snows or rain lah

Thanks. 2 layers of heatech or 2 layers of fleece better?

In terms of thickness:
Heat tech < heat tech extra warm < light fleece (polartec 100) < regular fleece (polartec 200)

I was at uniqlo just now and I almost got the uniqlo new seamless down parka. If you feel the uld is not insulating enough, then get the seamless down parka. It is definitely good enough for Hokkaido's winter. Now on sale 9990 yen.

@ts
Would suggest this

Baselayer : heatech, under armour compression or tights
Layer 1: long sleeve shirt and pants, fluffy stretchy lounge pants also good for comfort
Layer 2: sweater on top of 1
Layer 3: fleece sweater
Layer 4: wool coat or heavy down jacket

For indoors, can strip down to layer 1 or 2. For flexibility, I usually keep layer 3 as an option and swap it depending on which layer 4 items I'm using.
