OP, your body is scared cold kind. brands doesnt matter already. only can suggest you stack many layers and prepare a lot of good heat packs
U know the brand Bosideng from China and the down series with 1000 Fill power from other brands? Its very thin and compact and supposed to keep me warm without all the bulky fitting. I am asking all here for feedback to get my money worth.. afterall not cheap for these winter stuff and yes, u are right worse case just shake many heat packs off and plastered all over myself :s13: :s13: :s13:

Agree with previous poster.. different people different tolerance..
When i travel with my wife, she always end up having to buy more winter clothes while there..
Even though we use the same heat tech (including my kids), its always her that have to buy more..

Funnily enough, usually the local brands work better for her than uniqlo.. Not expensive but cannot pinpoint the brand as she did bought a few in different countries.. Typically it is made of wool..

Anyway unless no choice, I would not want to go for winter holiday.. too restrictive.. once others get cold, alot of things cannot do.

BTW... WOOL is the Best as thermal base

yes wool is good

but if chiu need to walk and walk

will perspire then chiu know want to cry feeling

and then when after walking, go eat in restoran with warmer

hoh seh u wan to take off wool innerwear in washroom, then wear back before going out?

this was before HeatTech

after HeatTech comes out, no more wool nightmare riao

Too cold can just buy layers at the winter location lo

Don't like to buy those 3 in 1 winter jacket (e.g. jacket advertises as insulation layer, shell layer and fleece). Prefer having 1 jacket/shirt for each layer so easy to remove and mix/match for better overall warmth performance

Moi just got a coat so going to try: base layer (wool shirt or uniqlo heatech) --> mid layer (wool/cashmere sweater) --> outer layer (coat for style/puffer jacket+windbreaker)

I find uniqlo heatech is quite good for base layer. But their outerwear or down jacket is poor compared to other brands

one way is to buy the wool and bring it also, just that your luggage will need to allocate space

so once u reach there, and discovered overkill, no issue, put back luggage, next day one layer lesser
or HeatTech only

so for you bring one additional small luggage just for the extra winter barang

You can start with uniqlo first and see how. Its cheap and reliable for most people
Other brands i use is decathlon ($), northface ($$) and moncler ($$$$).
Few years ago went japan 2nd hand shop and bought them, and now every winter bring out again to use. But wear until look like michelin man so went to buy a peacoat from ralph lauren to use this year

FP is measure of warmth to weight ratio, not total warmth.
If you buy those packable lightweight down jackets from montbell etc, it still won't beat those thicker down jackets. But if you just walk in city, it should be fine
I also suggest you watch some youtube videos on people travelling to the city you are going to in winter. Then look at what the people in those videos wear
Chocolates also can hand carry, not need pack :)

Unless you go winter countries frequently... at least once a year... no point buying too good or expensive winter wears...

else if 2-3yrs never go... the inner linings and the waterproof membrane coating will start to flake/peel... unless u store it really well...

especially for kids... is quite wasteful if buy new... coz every year sure outgrow the size... my wife usually buy pre-loved winter wear for my younger kids... u wun believe how cheap pple sell off their kids branded worn-once winter wear... after my kids wear once... she can sell away at the same price... quite amazing...

Have you tried their winter wear and does it really work? Say, under 10 degrees celcius? I saw they have shoes suitable for minus 20 degree but i doubt its functionality coz its really affordable compared to those big brands out there.
Depend on ur activity, ski, hiking or just daily shopping and walk in city.

I kena snowstorm in Iceland, I was staying at a farmstead, I drove the 150m from my cabin to the main building for dinner and the snow storm hit in the middle of dinner. I tried to drive back to my cabin after dinner, couldn't even make 20m. Totally whiteout with zero visibility. Had to ditch the car and slowly make our way back to the cabin. My kids were less than 10yr old then. I had to carry my girl because the snow was up to her waist at some area. The rented GLC 300 was totally buried under, luckily the farmstead has a tractor to pull it out from under the snow.
You are very brave to bring young kids on such a vacation and staying off the grid (compared to standard itinerary). I have a group of friends who self-drove in Norway during winter and were staying at a log house in the middle of nowhere hoping to catch the northern lights. Then they got a code red hurricane alert on their phone and spent the entire night prayer that their log house would hold out and their car outside would still be there in the morning.
